RB-DMX1 extremely disappointed

Super disappointed with this unit. Why does the software do such a poor job in determining the energy levels of a track? Why do I have to automate every phrase of every track in my library to get a decent light show? I thought this was the job of the RB-DMX1, not me..... None of the pre set shows come close to sound activation mode on the lighting fixtures straight out of the box. As this is now I have absolutely no use for this and just wasted $500.....

I'm sorry to hear that.

The lighting plug-in is in its infancy, and there are many improvements to come, but even in this early stage, there is a lot that the software can do without manual control or editing. This isn't a full lighting desk or comprehensive lighting software, it's an add-in to help automate the process for DJs who don't know much about lighting and want to make better use of their fixtures -- think of it as "sound-active plus;" it's better than simply running sound active... and it will only get better.

I wouldn't see it as "wasting" money on the purchase, simply that you're an early adopter who has had a different experience than expected.

Is there anything I can help you with to improve the experience? Have you poked around with all the settings and configurations to get the most out of it as-is?

Beyond what you've already mentioned, what do you feel are the features it's missing or falls short in delivering?

Thank you for the response and I do understand that the product is brand new and there will be problems as with any new type of technology like this, for this reason I am not returning it. I do have high hopes. Ass for anything that you can help me with, heres a couple of things.

1. Is there a way to get the software to analyze all tracks at once? As of now I am stuck holding shift and selecting a bunch of tracks at one time to analyze but not all at once.

2. Out of all the many different genres of music that I have analyzed so far, 99% of those are put in the category of "cool" which does not correspond correctly with the tracks at all. Is there a way to get them to go into the club 1 or 2 setting, without having to go into each individual track? I find this very time consuming considering the thing was marketed to the DJ community as something that would save time when setting up lighting.

3. If I throw on some 128 bpm EDM banger type track, the lights move slowly as if theres a slow dance track on. Its like its not reading the track properly. Any suggestions on what to do there? When analyzing phasing, a lot of times its just way off on what it thinks is going on in the track vs whats actually happening in the track. Does pioneer plan to address this?

I really do want this to work and I do see the potential in the product so hopefully these issues get sorted out. I am all ears for suggestions on how to fix these problems I am having, and can give you an update if I make any progress on my end.

Thanks

Chad,

We hope the product team is able to take the customer feedback into consideration and push forward some amazing features in the coming months. We all look ahead to a fantastic product (myself included -- and I've already got DMX lighting software I use separate from rekordbox).

1. To get the tracks all analysed at the same time, simply select all - CTRL+A (PC) or Command+A (Mac) and then right-click, and select Analyze Tracks, then on the pop-up, tick only the box beside Phrase, that will analyse all tracks for phrase. If you've already done some, there's no easy way to exclude them, so you may want to set up a MyTag for that purpose (eg. Lighting and No Lighting).

2. Yeah, they're aware of this and a future update will improve the variation, and hopefully also allow us to change them in batches.

3. Sometimes that depends on the fixtures you're using - many of the macros are configured for a full-complement of movers, pars, and bars, and if you set up a show with only pars (for example), it kinda sucks. We're working with a lighting designer and plan on adding some additional macros for better shows with fewer fixture combinations. In the meantime, if you want to make it more lively, consider changing the macros to the vivid, or club varieties, either by changing the scenes or as a manual override with the lighting mode pad controls.

Thanks for the help. Ive got one more question. I just hooked up 4 inno pocket spots and 1 of them was acting normal with the softwhere and other ones started going haywire, using strobes, spinning in all directions randomly. Any idea what could cause this?

Could be:

- the address of the unit doesn't match the address in the software (eg. hardware set for DMX address of 10 but the fixture is placed at address 9 in the grid)

- the fixture channel mode doesn't match the channel mode selected in the software (eg. 9ch vs 16ch modes)

- the DMX cable you're using is actually a regular XLR, not rated at 75ohms and there is interference (this is the least likely, but sometimes a problem)
