Browser columns

Hey everyone,

Please help me out here.... My DDJ-1000 just came in on Tuesday and I am switching to rekordbox after almost a decade of using Traktor.

Would someone please explain to me what the first 2 columns in the track browser mean? One does not show anything, except an arrow on 4 sound samples that came included with RB and another one just says "CUE" for every track. Documentation and google searches turn out no results.

I can hide the first one by hiding Attribute column. What the hell is the other one?

And why does the waveform preview column has so much empty space on the left?

I also have the Attribute column hidden because it doesn't contain anything for normal tracks. The second column contains a lock icon if Analysis Lock is on for that track, and CUE if the track has memory cues or hot cues set. You can't hide that column.

If you click on the empty space on the left of the Preview column, it previews the track from the beginning, whereas clicking in the waveform itself will preview from that point. The empty space also contains a stop button while previewing.

Erik, really appreciate quick response!

I guess it makes sense that CUE/Lock column can not be hidden since it also displays the number of the deck the truck is loaded into.

As far as empty space in the track preview, you are right. Can't believe I missed that after using that play/stop a bunch of times :) Still, a rather odd UI design choice, though Traktor has an entire column for that and displays nothing but a headphone icon, which never made sense to me.

Have to say, Rekordbox 5.x interface has lots of room for improvement and there is waaay too much wasted space, in my view.  I started this thread for a different issue, but hopefully Pulse can relay this information to his team and they give us an option to customize further.

1. I really don't like how loaded track waveforms span the entire width of the window and i was never a fan of vertical waveforms. I guess i am biased, but i think Traktor nailed that aspect. Left is left, right is right and they just display a little pitch drift line, if you need it, but all info from decks 1 / 2 or 3 / 4 stays on the side where it belongs.

2. The entire UI of RB 5.x is too dark and flat. Everything blends together too much. I'm getting old. Some more distinction between sections would be easier on my eyes.

3. The whole PAD mode and Auto Beat Loop display takes entirely too much space. I barely ever use loops, and only set cue points on tracks with weird intros that are a pain to mix in. Meanwhile Play/Clue buttons and Jog display on the screen is tiny. I wish I could have an option that looks like Traktor Essential view.

@Pulse, you've been around since the Mayan calendar was invented [I know, because I've seen you here back then :) ]. Please relay this to your devs. Lots of us are getting too old for these damn young wippersnappers and their 1920 x 1200 retina displays. We need UI "accessibility" options to stay in the biz. I can't drop mad bass on a warehouse full of teenagers or make a bunch of my peers drop everything and shake it to Christopher Cross - Ride Like the Wind when I can't even see what im playing :)

LOL - You calling me old?! 🤣

Yeah, it's tough to create a product that has everything everyone wants -- and still looks / functions properly. All feedback is taken into consideration, but we can't guarantee that they will be incorporated or not.
