Rekordbox vs different thumb drives

Hey there! i recently got some new usb sticks kingston hyperx 64gb and sandisk extreme go 64gb. And here what i noticed: if i browse my collection from sandisk it works smoothly and load speed is acceptable. But kingston is really laggy, rb stops responding for like 10 seconds or more every time i open collection, scroll or load any track.

Both sticks are connected to the same usb port when operating, they're both formatted as FAT32 and both work flawlessly with cdjs or as a general purpose storage.

Are there any special requirements rb has for thumb drives?

Sadly, the HyperX is a fast drive for large files, but then absolutely falls flat when it comes to the read/write of small files -- which it has to do with rekordbox when it comes to the waveform, cue / memory data, and album art.

There's no special requirements, but I only personally recommend the SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.0/3.1 units, or the Corsair Voyager GTX. I have tested dozens of different makes and models of USB drives and those two are the only two I would ever use.

Thank you for the comprehensive answer! Just to make it 100% clear, hyperX's lack of performance only affects RB and USB 3.0, it technically should have no difference in speed on cdj and xdjs where usb 2.0 is installed?

CDJs and XDJs are USB2 devices; there is nothing they do requiring more than the maximum possible throughput of the USB2 standard. That said, the device itself, when operating below that maximum throughput, is what's causing the bottleneck -- and in your case with the HyperX, it's still the small file read speeds.
