AUX Input on Pioneer XDJ-RX2 for iPad/phone

Going to buy an XDJ-RX2 and been thinking how to use the AUX as a 3rd input since it's only 2 channels. I have an iPad Pro and hoping I could connect it or my phone through the RX2 AUX to layer in acapella tracks, samples, the odd streaming request, and have as a general backup device just in case.

With a standard 3.5mm to RCA cable, I read on some forums that consumer electronics like phones and iPads have a weak signal that will give you low volume even if you jack up the AUX level on the RX2 controls.

What are people's experience with this? Solutions you've found?

I thought about the Traktor Audio 2, but I think that only works with Traktor DJ and not algoriddim djay or other general audio apps?

This article recommended buying something like the Radial ProAV2, a passive A/V direct box (non-powered), to convert the iPad headphone jack signal to regular line level for pro audio. Would that work? I realize the AUX input on the RX2 is RCA so might need to convert from XLR?

Or would a cheaper powered mini mixer like this Rolls MX51S Mini Mix 2 work and still give a proper clean signal without distortion / blowing up my RX2?

I'm kinda new to all this audio engineering stuff with signal levels. Any input is appreciated, thanks guys!

you are correct, there is a difference between the headphone level from an iPhone/Pad etc compared to a line level device but to be honest you can easily make it up with the RX's gain control without any noticable drop in quality, you will however need to remember to readjust your levels when switching back to the player's decks - what you suggest will work but to be honest it won't be terribly elegant so maybe this isn't the best solution for your needs. Maybe consider a couple of XDJ 700s and a mixer, shop around for some decent second hand items

The XDJ RX 2 has a +12dB switch which will help with any low level inputs. As the post above mentions you will need to be careful of your levels when switching between channels and remember there is no headphone cueing for the aux input! I usually find it easier to plug straight into a line input using the switch and then adjust the gain from there as it allows you to cue through your headphones.

I am new to XDJ RX2.

From the above I understand that I can plug a regular headphone jack to phono lead into the AUX socket in the back of the RX2, then plug a the headphone plug into a phone (or other device) and play whatever is playing on the phone (mp3, youtube video, etc.) through the RX2, yes?

Input volume is then controlled by the trim knob and switch, I understand. (Although why there are 2 adjustments is not clear. Surely just make the knob 0 to +12db and forget about the switch, no?)

Also, why plug into the AUX anyway? Would it not work if plugged into the phono or line sockets?

@Ron > The use of the +12dB switch is to give the gain knob an additional boost; you would still use that knob to fine-tune the input level.

And yes, you could use one of the channels for input if you need to have a level meter, EQ and cueing, but the AUX input is there to free-up that channel.
