DDJ SX3 failed to connect audio ! in Serato

Hi there,

I am have issues with my Serato and DDJ-SX3. I am on 2019 macbook pro running Catalina 15.15.7

When I am in the program with no software attached, I can't get the audio to play out of the internal macbook speakers. Beyond that, every time I start up the program with the DDJ-SX3 connected or connect the DDJ-SX3 while the program is loaded, it looks like the hardware loads up for a second (aka it flashes to the 2 deck setup) then at the bottom it says "error: failed to connect audio !" and then quickly goes back to a one deck setup as if no hardware is connected. I checked my sound preferences in my mac and the DDJ-SX3 comes up there as an option, so it IS recognized. I updated to the latest version of serato dj (2.5.1) and loaded the newest firmware for it (1.02, it already had it on there but I just did it again). I tried uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling. I did not see any prompt in system preferences to not allow Pioneer. I looked in system info software disabled and did not see anything related to Pioneer.

Because it is a 2019 macbook with only usb-c, I am currently connecting from a hub that is usb-c to multiple usb-a  ports, and from there a usb-a to b into the back of the ddj-sx3. I've tried a different hub and cable and that doesn't change anything, although keep in mind it is recognized and it allowed me to do the firmware update so data can be transferred over it. I just ordered a direct usb-c to b cable in order to bypass and rule that out though, should be here monday.

I have a wedding on Friday that I am djing so I am desperate for this to work. Please help. Thanks!!! -Zack

I honestly can't remember when I did it initially, perhaps a few months ago, but I have tried reinstalling it multiple times, uninstalling then reinstalling the drivers and the prompt never came up, and there is no indication in the settings that it is disabled in security and privacy.

Open your System Information app, click the Software > Disabled Software item at the left and see if there's anything on the right.

Do you possibly have the SX3 assigned as the default output for system audio or notification sounds?

No I do not, under Types in the Mac's sound output menu it just says built-in next to "Macbook pro speakers" and USB next to "DDJ-SX3"

Double check the Audio MIDI Setup app > Audio devices window; these icons should be on your default audio device (whether speakers, headphones, whatever):

So in my desperation here I decided to upgrade to Big Sur and lo and behold, that appears to have solved things  💫

Strange though because I loaded up Serato afterwards and the same issue persisted initially with no sound coming out without the hardware connected. Once I had it connected and audio was playing through the DDJ-SX3 and I unplugged it, the ability to hear previews without the hardware finally returned.

So crisis averted in the near term, but from what I've been hearing people are still having a lot of issues with certain apps / plug-ins etc so there's a chance I might need to downgrade the OS at some point. Any insight as to what may have been going on would be great as a result if possible. Regardless, I appreciate the time you spent trying to troubleshoot.

Thank you a lot,
Zack
