Hello There : I have the same issue with that SSD Sandisk Extreme pro 1To.
It has been correctly formated to FAT32 prior to export from Rekordbox.
The files are on the drive, no issue there, but if I try to plug it to the CDJ-2000NXS2, nothing is loading and I have a red "FORMAT USB" on the CDJ's main LCD screen.
I have formated the drive with Easeus, as none of the software listed above are no longer found on internet.
I use on a PC running on Windows, i9-10900KF CPU @ 3.70GHz, 32Go RAM,
and I also tried formating with an asus notebook i7 with no luck so far.
Please Jay, can you help ?
Hello : this is what I've used to format to FAT 32, however, i could synch the hard drive to Rekordbox BUT the CDJs 2000NXS2 won't recognize it and give me a "FORMAT USB" message on the LCD screen when I connect the Drive.
So it's obviously a CDJ issue. Any other suggestion please ?
Really Guys ? Anyone ?
You may have more than 1 partition on the drive, or did not format it properly (FAT32 + MBR).
Same problem with me. formatted it to FAT32, could load everything on it with rekordbox (couldn't before when it wasn't FAT32)
But when I try to load it in my cdjnxs2 (latest firmware) it says 'Format USB'
Any help here?
@Mikey > Try using a different tool to format the drive.
Got it, for some reason it wasnt set to MBR properly! Works fine with me now
Awesome!
So : Thanks for the MBR tips which I couldn't set using Easus, so I'm found Rufus online which let me choose the MBR option finally !

Thank you all, it now works perfectly :D
same problem here....formated an extreme pro 3.2 ssd 1 tb and i get the "format usb" message.....anything else i have formated with my latop (2017 macbook pro i7) is working with no problem in my cdj's....any ideas please?...any external format tool for mac?i don't know what to do
@Sakis > Unfortunately, it may simply be that the drive in question is not compatible.
Pioneer DJ does not guarantee 100% compatibility with any USB drive. Functionality of one drive does not guarantee functionality of another identical make / model drive. Manufacturers are known to change the memory controller chip per availability or cost, and as a result, there is always a chance that a drive may not be compatible with the player host chipset. Recommendations or the results of another user may not be the same for you and your drive.
Hi, I have the same problem. I already formatted the sanddisk ssd to MS-DOS (FAT 32) using disk utility on mac, and it worked for me using a CDJ-3000 but it didn't work with a CDJ-2000. Any recommendation ? since it does not depend on me what CDJ they are going to give me when I have to play music
It may have nothing to do with formatting but more to do with the host controller on the drive making it such that the CDJ-2000 doesn't recognize the drive; see my comment above re: compatibility.
So you are telling me that the external drive may not be compatible and now I can't do anything? It seems very unprofessional to me that one of the best brands in the world for external drives is not compatible with a CDJ-2000 but it works on a CDJ-3000. Makes me believe that the problem is in Pioneer, if I have a format that the manual says it should work, but it dosent and instead of trying to help me solve it you give me an easy answer saying that the disk is not compatible when it is. It feels disrespectful for us your clients....
If you're asking why a USB3.2 drive produced in 2020(ish) is not compatible with a CDJ-2000 that has a USB2.0 host chipset produced in 2009, I think the question just answered itself. While the spec should be backard-compatible, it's not guaranteed, and even the USB drive manufacturers will say that.
If you want a USB drive that will work with a 2009 product, you're going to have the best results with a USB 2.0 drive, but you're also going to have USB 2.0 speeds. While there are some USB 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 drives that do work with the older players, again, Pioneer DJ cannot certify and guarantee compatibility and 100% functionality of all drives, even if I have the same drive working in mine - you may get one with a different memory controller that does not work.
I'm sorry that this isn't the answer you were looking for, but it's an unfortunate reality of the tech world.
@Pulse Regarding your latest answer.
I have purchased a Sandisk Extreme Pro 256GB 3.2 recently and 2 Sandisk Ultra Flair 128GB 3.0 drives some years ago.
All of them were formatted in FAT32 and (successfully) tested on my RX2 at home. When I went to the venue with 2x CDJ2000NXS setup, I was surprised to notice the Extreme Pro said "FORMAT DRIVE" on both players. One of the Ultra Flairs did not recognize the RB database structure (only CONTENTS) on both players. Luckily the last drive read properly, so I was able to use LINK, but it is quite nerve-racking to see your tested drives fail in the venue. Without plugging the drives into my laptop, I tested them again on my RX2, and they all worked fine.
I have read that drive capacity should not matter as long as they are formatted in FAT32, and playing open-format most of the time, I like to bring 65+ GB of music.
I understand Pioneer cannot guarantee full compatibility for all devices and drives, but what is the best approach to guaranteed working drives? Different USB drives in capacity and USB protocol? Or just stick to 2.0 and bring multiple 32GB drives?
Cheers,
Arvid
