Using Google Drive to access database across multiple computers

Hi

I think/hope this is possible...

I currently have a laptop and a desktop that both run Rekordbox. I also have all of my music files stored on my Google Drive.

Is there a way that I can get Rekordbox, on both computers, to save the Rekordbox database file on Google Drive and then get both computers to point to it - so that any music changes done on my laptop are reflected on my desktop (and vice versa)?

I've watched the helpful video (HERE) that talks through migrating your database, but this is based on it being done to an external drive/source - but both my computers consider Google Drive as internal C Drive source, so ultimately it won't work.

All help appreciated!

Thanks

Matt

It certainly is possible, as I've done it with Dropbox and the instructions would be fairly similar. If you'd like, I can email you at the address you've used to register at the forums, but would need you to acknowledge and allow me to do so first.

Hi Matt,

This is not possible.

Your best bet is to use something like Resilio Sync, which enables you to automatically sync files between computers and manually set where each folder should sync to.

In this case, you'd sync your rekordbox data folder on computer A, with the one on computer B. However, your music paths would have to be the same.

Hello as well!

I would also like instructions on how to get this working with Drive.  Maybe someone can make it a sticky?

Thanks much,

Hi Pulse, are these instructions still valid for v5.4.3? I just tried it, and no matter what I do, I get an error when I load up RB that the database can't be found. Any other suggestions to try? I am on Windows.

@Andrew > They are as far as my testing goes on Mac with Dropbox; your mileage may vary when it comes to Windows and other cloud systems.

Did you edit the paths per the instructions?

I took a slightly different approach while I was on Traktor, allowing me to use the same collection on both Mac and Windows PC with the same data. Reading the the guide Pulse made, I estimate this works exactly the same for Rekordbox (by editing the settings file to appoint locations). I took this approach because of the different operating systems.

Big ultra fat disclaimer: I didn't test this on Rekordbox yet, please be thoughtful of this and backup everything you have before attempting this.

What I've done:

- I've created a USB stick and I gave it a specific and fixed drive letter to make it unique (it was T:\). I've installed Traktor on my Macbook and appointed all the data locations to the T:\ drive, this included all the system data folders, folders for metadata, and I put all the music in a folder on the same USB stick. Traktor allows this from the program itself, reading Pulse' his guide you'll have to do this by editing a settings file for Rekordbox.

- Next I installed Traktor on my PC, and did the same thing. Regular install, appoint all the data location to that T:\ drive. (Be mindful of editing that settings file from Rekrodbox)

- On top of this I assigned Google Drive to make a full backup of the T:\ drive, so everything is nicely backed up whenever I plug in the drive and/or make changes to the collection.

There is one catch tho: (on Traktor at least) you have to insert the USB drive before you boot up Traktor, else it won't find any locations and reset data locations to it's default folders. If this happend all I had to do was insert the USB stick, re-assign all the folders to the T:\ drive, quit Traktor and restart it. Bit annoying but nothing big and easily fixed. Don't know how Rekordbox will handle this!

This allowed me to do my thing on the Macbook, and whenever I wanted to do some work on the PC I only had to take the USB stick from the Macbook and insert it into the Windows PC. I used this method because at the time I was using a very old Macbook Air (2013) and my Windows PC was a lot quicker with analyzing songs in bulk. So I rather did that on the PC than on the Macbook.

The Google Drive sync was my safety net. Every time I plugged it in on either device, it automatically backed up the entire USB stick with all of the related data. Meaning if I'd lose or break my current USB stick, all I had to do is format a new stick, give it a fixed drive letter (T:\) and download everything to the stick. Back in business in no time.
