Have you tried asking this over at VDJ, they may have a better source for your answer since they mapped out the controller for VDJ 8, we don't do the mapping here.
I have a DDJ SB2 / Virtual DJ 8 combination and I find that sometimes the Trim controls do not function. I can turn them left or right and it makes no difference to the channel output level.
If I move the Trim control right and left quickly it seems to "wake them up" and then they work fine. If I use them again a while later the same thing happens.
Not sure what the cause is? Has anyone had a similar problem? How can it be solved?

Good point. Actually I changed over to Serato DJ and the trims work perfectly now. The high and low pass filters are also more responsive! I am much happier with Serato DJ overall.
I can expand on this for other, VDJ has auto gain on by default , this in turn overrides the gain set by the trim dials at the top of the controller. Also in pre 8.2 versions there is a bug that happens where some functions stop working(randomly) , I was told elsewhere that this was due to anti piracy measures (cracked copy) however my copy is legit and I have not had this issue since upgrade to V8.2 , but as a test I did setup a virtual machine and a cracked copy and yes, randomly functions will stop responding , this is no doubt due to the alteration of the code to enable it's functions without paying.
Another thing in pre 8.2 versions is mapping, it's different to post 8.2, in early versions the unit behaves like a DDJ-SB and not the newer model with tap and decks 3/4
