Running in the red!!

I have read a lot of posts where people complaining about being in the red on their mixer,

Check this out, Here's an hour of carl cox on Dj Sounds running in the red?

is it really that bad as i see many big names having blatant disregard for this unwritten rule??

Hmm I think they think red is as loud as it will go so red it is lol.

One question I have it the switch on the back for minus db, say you have it in the red clipping on 0db then switch it to -6db does it make a quieter clipping output or drop it down so it does not clip?

Good question! but better just avoid it from happening.. I personally always take great care when it comes to my audio levels and soundquality.

That's called the Master Attenuation switch which sets the maximum output to -6dB, -3dB or 0dB.

I'm going to assume the sound engineer in those clubs is familiar to dealing with DJs running in the red and has it set accordingly.

@ Gavin so your saying if its set to -6db the mixer can not output signal over -6db?? The thought it just dropped the signal by 6bd?

The MA adjusts the level of the output post-Master fader. It's the last thing the signal passes through before the master outputs. It cuts the outward signal by the set amount.

It could be Dj Jesus Christ Superstar, but on my mixer, NO REDS are allowed!! I've plenty of mixers down here where I live getting blown/damaged channels due to poor volume handling!

If the signal has been distorted in the beginning or in the middle of the chain, it does not matter whether it was attenuated at the final stage. What comes out of the speaker will always be distorted.

I too watched this DJ doing his routine without him once minding what came out of the speakers.  If it was by design or intent, no one will ever know.
