Store music files AND database/library info on external HDD

I can't find discussion on exactly what I want to do. I'm using Rekordbox 3.0 with an iMac OSX 10.8.5. I own an XDJ-R1 but use CDJ-900s and 2000s at gigs.

I just bought a 1tb portable harddrive to store all my music on and have formatted it to FAT32 or whatever it is. I would like to also store my RB database/library/playlist info on the HDD... in essence I would like to work directly off the HDD, creating playlists and setting cue points and then be able to plug that HDD into CDJs and have it recognize the playlists without having to "Export to device". Is this possible?

Bonus... is it possible to then plug that HDD into my Macbook also running RB3 and create playlists etc?

No, sorry. Much like iTunes and an iPod relying on the software to export the music to the device, rekordbox can store the database on the external device, but unlike Serato, it doesn't analyse in-place, you must export a second copy. It could be to the same device, but it will double the used space.
