Question Before Gig
Hey guys,
I wanted to ask just a few questions before having a gig on Pioneer CDJ-2000s. First of all, I was lucky to get thorough answers regarding my flash drive post and have decided to pick up 2x Patriot Memory Xporter Rage (32GB) drives. I think its important to note that I will not be using recordBox during this session as I have never used it in the past. What I would like to know, however, is how I should add music to the USB; I know it sounds silly, but should I make any folders on the drive, or should I dump everything there? Next, I'd like to know how I can arrange my tracks in key (for harmonic mixing) if I am not using Pioneer's recordBox software? Should I edit the track titles to say, "1A," "2A" and etc.?
Thanks for the help guys, deeply would appreciate answers.

Thanks for the answer but, as I mentioned in the above post -- I will not be using rekordBox. Do you have any suggestions?
@ Alastor Music > It depends on what software you are currently using to edit the titles of the tracks, but I would recommend changing the title beginning or end in order to see your tracks with the "Key" listed up front. If the "Key" isn't as important to have right up front, I would recommend using the "Comment" section if available to write the "Key" in.
The first way will work great on the CDJ-2000's because they have a larger screen and it will preview the track title nicely, but if you go for the "Comment" method it works just as good, but you will need to hover over each track to see the "comment" section and the "Key" you entered. Nothing bad really.
What software will you be using to edit the tracks, if any software at all?
P.S. for best use in the future, you should really check out Rekordbox, it's Free from Pioneer! ;)

Not using RB during your gig does not mean you won't use it to prepare for the gig, does it?
The best way to export files to USB in order to use them most effectively on Pioneer CDJs is to use RekordBox before the gig.
Import the files into RB for analysis, then use the soft to 1) configure how to sort them out 2) export them to your USB stick so they're ready for use on the decks.
@Alastor,
if you just drop the mp3s in the usb stick, you might have problems.
Some tracks might get E-Errors and the cdj2000 wont be able to read them.
I have seen this happening.
I suggest you install RekordBox and spent some time to organize and export your playlists through it.
Cdj2000s USB stick information is meant to be via Rekordbox.
For example if you just copy your tracks in USB, cdj2000 wont recognize each track immediately and will need few mins for it to show the waveform.
RB is very easy to use. All you will need is 5-10 mins to understand.
If you dont want to use it, I think its safer to play with CDs
As for the key if you write it at comments of mp3 file you will be able to see it in cdj2000 screen
or in RB when you export your tracks, you can choose to export key of each track as well, together with all other information.
Hey guys, sorry for sounding ignorant! I do have rekordBox software, I didn't know that it could help me directly with this issue! So, to the best of my understanding, I can fill the ID3 tags within there and then I can use rekordBox to export directly to the USB. I see. Till now I have been filling the key's of the tracks in the Comments section of iTunes. Do you think that information will still show or do I have to re-do them through rekordBox? Thanks so much for the help.
@Alastor > It's no problem mate. But it would have been easier for you just to ask if there is a way to do this in Rekordbox in the first place, other than trying to find a way without using Rekordbox. RB is great and really handles a lot of great tasks and is easy to use.
Yes, by filling in the "Comments" section in iTunes it will still display the Key in the "Comments" section in Rekordbox, as well as the actual key in the "Key" section in Rekordbox if you use "Mixed In Key". If the information doesn't appear in Rekordbox at first, just right click and select "Reload Tag". That should be all you need to do, but let us know how it goes.
By the way, don't ever be afraid to ask on the forums if something is capable in Rekordbox, the chances are that it can already be done, or you can suggest it as a future feature to the engineers. But please search through the forums first to make sure there isn't already a thread for it.
Thanks,
Foster
If you're not planning on using Rekordbox, put the key at the front of the filename.
Thanks guys for your great help and prompt replies. It's pretty rare that you get on a forum these days and are lucky enough to get fast, meaningful and yet encouraging replies. Thanks so much.
No problem -- glad we could help.
But as noted, the real solution would be to prepare your music via Rekordbox for the best manageability of your music.
