Using CDJ 2000s (Latest version) with USB key (Rekordbox latest version), CRASH!

Setup:

Using CDJ2000 x2, USB LaCie XtremKey flash drive 32 GB x1, in LINK mode.

Had a very embarrassing episode last night at the club. Setup has been working perfectly without problems, however this time I had a crash.

Mid track, USB red light went off, USB seemed to disconnect, both decks (using link) just went to standard mode (as if I just started the decks up, ready to start).

I quickly took the USB key out, reinserted straight away and everything started fine, and I had no problems after this.

I am pretty sure my USB drive is perfectly fine. The CDJs have been performing well, and I have never had a problem like this before.

Been loving this setup, but am a bit worried about the reliability!

Any solutions or suggestions?

Thanks

Eugene

@Eugene > Sorry to hear of your issue. Did you try to reproduce the issue at home (same track causing issues perhaps)? Did this happen on the host CDJ or the linked CDJ?

Track has not been causing any issues, and have played it out on several occasions, again without problems.

Have not been able to reproduce this issue.

Happened on the host CDJ.

@Eugene > Was there the possibility that the USB stick was probably not fully inserted into the CDJ and it eventually became loose?

This is the first time I've heard of something like this happening as far as I can recall.

@Eugene > I would try a different LINK cable and ensure it's properly seated.  A loose or improperly connected cable can cause the link to fail which would cause the player to die.

I will use a new LINK cable next time I'm there.

But a few comments on this:-

A) If it was a LINK problem, would it switch the USB "off"? The red USB light turned off straightaway. And if this would not occur with a faulty LINK cable, then something else is causing a crash.

B) The turntable the track was playing on was where the USB was plugged into. (i.e. not the LINKed turntable, as I stated in my second post)

C) This setup is being used daily, without other problems so far.

Thanks

@Eugene > It certainly could be a problem with the drive or connection, but the LINK is also another point to consider.

Is a faulty LINK cable able to disconnect the USB from on to off, from red light to no light? I'm just curious on this point?

Best

No, the deck connected to the device directly would not be affected by the LINK cable disconnecting; the red light going out is normal from time to time, but if the device disappears on the host player, the problem is the device or the connection.

OK, so LINK cable is not the issue then it seems,

Device has been checked and is fine.

Connection problem? Hmm. The USB was securely connected...

Seems like there isn't any real solution....

Looks like I'm going to have to hope and pray that this doesn't occur again. Love the setup, but if it fails again - that would be unacceptable.

Well, it certainly could be the device itself, but try it again (outside of a show if possible) and get yourself a second drive to run on the other player!  ;)

What is your way/system of checking a USB device? I will try that method as well as mine. Although I must say I think the (pretty new) LaCie XtremKey I use is in good working order.

Do you suggest using 2 USB sticks and not use LINK? Is this a more stable setup recommended by you guys (Pioneer)!?

I've had this same issue, both on the master and the slave. Out of nowhere either the link player resets or the main deck resets. Both are very frustrating and have happened on several occasions, mostly at my house where it's not embarrassing, but still very concerning. I have a gig tonight where I'm bringing my own cdj's and i will put a new network cable, hopefully nothing goes wrong.

@Eugene > What Pulse means by checking the USB device is trying it out at home like you would use it in a club. As for using 2 sticks, well have two sources is always going to better than having 1. Link has always worked perfectly for me but I always bring a second (and even third stick) as a back up - just in case.

@Cesar > Did you get any error codes? What is your media source (laptop / USB / SD)?

USB is the source and it happened again, but on the slave deck while the main deck was playing the track, so there was no interruption .... The good news is, I figured out why. The link cable is loose and any play on it resets it. I have 3 link cables and all of them have a little play in them. There's gotta be something small enough to wedge in and fix the problem. A tooth pick or something.

I have the same problem with mine. I use 1 USB connected to deck 1, i connect the link cable but the connection keeps failing as the cables do not connect securely. This seems to be a common fault with CDJ2000s, what can i do about it? Ive arranged for the CDJs to be serviced but i can only assume nothing will be done about the problem

I have tried different cables but ive had none that work without adjusting or fixing them in place

Just don't move the CDJ while you're playing, especially in front of a huge crowd. And don't jump on top of the table and jump around crazy, you just might cause too much movement on the table and wind up disconnecting...... It will definitely be an embarrassing moment..... wanna get away?

when you pay £1500 for one CDJ you expect it to be able to do its job, no matter what is happening when your using them. Even when they are being used at home one little movement of the link cable causes the link to fail.its simply unacceptable

Believe me, I know this is unacceptable. But unfortunately when you go from club to club, this just might happen and it does take away from your performance so to speak, if you have to keep in mind that ethernet cable might unplug with any significant movement.

@Oddie > I see you've taken the units back to be serviced in another thread - please keep us updated and if you could keep all comments in one place, that'd be great.
