CDJ2000 lost communication error
Had a weird one last night, its never happened before.. while player 2 was doing its thing.. track 1 cue'd up ready to go on player 1... towards the end of the track on player 2 it decided to throw its dummy out with a 'communications error wrong speed' red banner message across the screen... with this player 2 stopped playing the track, lucky i had a track ready to go on player 1...
so what went wrong...?
wasnt doing anything out of the ordinary, the Ethernet cables were all in place (between the gigabit switch / cdj1, djm900nexus & cdj2), all connections were intact / well connected! The decks were running for about 5hrs.... not that this had been a problem in the past!
After player 2 was rebooted it seemed to connect fine and play the source usb hd material fine...
Was certainly a WTF moment...

I spose understanding the error modes while sharing usb from player one via ethernet switch, linked with one other cdj and djm900nexus would be a start... as the error messages are poorly covered in the user manual (ive read it once lol).
Potential future update ideas - ive never been happy with the speed of track loading, skipping and seaching over the pro link... is much slower on the 'other' deck - of course i accept the deck hosting the usb drive is probably going to be faster, but still the pro link seems slow... thought id get a gigabit switch to ensure it wasnt the weakest link!
The one thing that would help this, which is probably over and above the hw limits of the player, is having the whole track loaded to memory, enabling the usb drive in the host player to be released for quicker seek / access for player two, the 'other' player.
With an issue like ive had could it have been the HD not being able to keep up with playing two tracks at once - not that this was the case as track on player 1 was cue'd ready to go.. while player two was live.. in this case....
any ideas from technical (pm'd over) would be handy - to ensure this doesnt happen again... and if it does ill take a pic of the error code! Happened so fast i didnt want the floor to stop so quickly dealt with the issue!
Thanks Gavin!
@Matt > I've opened a ticket on this issue so the engineers will read through, investigate and respond accordingly.
@Matt > Terribly sorry about the response - it was entirely my fault, the engineers gave me a response some time ago - I just couldn't find time to post.
"The engineers answered the question.

Exactly the same caution for the “Communication Error” was not found in the error code list of CDJ2000.
The followings are similar and possible cautions, but both are shown only when starting the communication by connecting a LAN cable.
105 "Communication Error. Reboot player."
106 "Communication speed incorrect. Check players link connection."
We assumed that the problem could be caused by loose connection of the cables or unknown impact of the Gigabit hub.
Assuming only from what Matt posted on the thread, we would advise him to review and organize the connection of all his equipment.
We have never heard about any advantage of using gigabit hub to make Pro DJ Link faster, but we would like to know the brand and model of such a gigabit hub, if it is so effective as he mentioned."
Unless it was vibrations from the pair of subs under my booth there would be no movement of the cable system in my flight case.
power and data are kept separate and tied down - im using a Netgear GS105 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch.. to get this in the flight case with the cdjs and the 900nexus mixer was a god send... i really hate having boxes with cables draped all over the place - its a safety issue at my regular club nights, as the punters can get up close and personal with me... everything must be neat & tidy to avoid those drunken snags!
Im not a fan of the rj45 connector, the chances of vibrations is a real issue, however ive never had this issue when only the cdjs were connected with one cable between the pair of them.... im that paranoid about those rj45's ive gaffer taped them in to ensure maximum security!
i understand the gigabit isnt required for the sort of data speeds the pro link needs... but its all i had in the house... being a faster switch isnt a problem where as 10 base t probably might be lol!
Major weirdness last night. After 4 1/2 years of reliability and thousands of dollars earned from my set of original CDJ 2000s, I had a weird situation. Nearly a 6 hour performance. Some background. I use LINK on Rekordbox 99.9.% and have maybe played CDs once or twice. My second player had a song playing and all of a sudden the screen went blank, BUT the LINK light continued to blink, and the song continued to play with no interruptions. After that song ended, I played the next song from Player 1, turned Player 2 off and on with no issue the rest of the night. After reading numerous posts on the E8709 "Communication Error", I am convinced it could be network related. I have been using the same switch for nearly 4 and a half years. I have noticed recently when scrolling and searching through playlists and looking stuff up through SEARCH, there has been some freezing up and WAIT pops up. These players have remained in flight cases all the time and have been treated with care. Both have Firmware 4.32 on them. I was thinking about putting Firmware 4.33 on them. Anybody have any ideas? Since it just began, I am going to start with physical cables / switch first, then move back to the players. Sending the player back to Pioneer right now is not an option. The E8709 communication error when it's occurred has not caused music stoppage or delay, it's just nerve racking to see it pop up.
@Michael > That's an internal communication error -** please contact Pioneer technical support** for servicing.
Pulse, can you give me your email address? I want to send you a video.
