The hdd needs to be in fat32 format to be recognized by the cdj's. You don't need rekordbox for playing tracks no.

Quick question, can I play music/tracks straight from a hard drive if they havnt been imported into rekordbox? got a gig coming up and a friend has his music on a HD can he plug straight in and play?

I have been seeking help as my WD Passport usb 3.0 2TB HDD is not working with the CDJ2000 nxs. It was also reported that someone else here had the same issue with that drive as well.
You should have a back up plan or test your drive with the nxs if you can.
