In short, at the moment FX and Midimapping this mixer just suck!
My other mixer is a Rane Sixty-Two and Rane did it all right!
So, I got the S9, and I love it but there are a lot of things that are just much much better on the SP1 like the browser, pads and effects controls.
First of all effects, you can only activate 1 effect at a time on the S9, be it internal or serato. So I'd rather just use the internal effects on the mixer and control the serato effects on the SP1, but with the mixer connected you can't activate effects on a chain even through the SP1 or software because it's kind of on "S9 mode". It shows an USB icon written "insert enabled" on the effects panel on serato, but I haven't found way to "un-insert"/disable it or map out the fx buttons on the mixer yet. (these should ABSOLUTELY be remappable).
The browsers and other midi mappings are on the same channel so we can't map them to do different things, is there a way around this or my only hope is to wait for a firmware update or something like that? This could give this mixer soooo much flexibility, specially now with Serato's new key sync, key shifting, etc ... The browser on the sp1 just seems to have been more well thought out, its 1 knob with 2 well lit load buttons, can't express how much I was hoping for something that simple and usefull on the S9. But being that the browser knobs are there they could be so usefull since we could do 3 mappings on it, like activate key sync on each channel, and key shift to both sides for example (this could also be done on the 6 serato fx buttons). And I'd love to use the back or load buttons to toggle pitch lock on and off on each channel too!!!
These are really my main concerns but overall you guys could make the S9+SP1 a beast of a combo if we could remap the s9 a little better. The pads on the SP1 are a world ahead even with no RGB, specially since there are knobs really close to them on the latter wich makes it impossible for any advanced finger drumming.

I also just realized that the midi channels for the hot cues, saved flips, roll and slicer are the same on the sp1 and the s9 on channel 1 so if I go for a roll on the sp1 it will go to roll on the s9. Its just on channel 1 though and the sampler works independently so that's a relief.
This is not a Pioneer Hardware issue, this is Serato. I reached out to them and mentioned this already, they basically said it works as it does and may be updated sometime down the road. No firm time, honestly the SP1 pads are not a "world ahead" by any means. They are the exact same just a bit smaller. I put the DDJ Sp1 in my sock drawer and really dont miss it. If they make them work together in the future great, one thing I would like to see if the ability to use multiple effects so we will see what happens.
I thought it was pioneer beacause of the midi channels mapping, but if it's serato I guess we won't be seing changes anytime soon, wich is a shame. I know they are the same pads but they are just a lil small and very badly positioned, it's fine if it's just for hitting cues but for doing crabs and faster stuff the samplers volume knob and the level/mixing knobs for the headphones really get in the way. Size definitely matters too because if you're doing like a crab on the upper pad its easier to hit the one below by accident on the smaller ones, but size was the lesser issue for me than positioning.
Effects are on top of the list for sure! There should be a simple way to disable the fx insert from the s9 so we could use all 6 either through serato or a controller.
This is not an official Pioneer response -- I would have to agree with @Alastair's comments regarding the effects, I believe the changes would have to be made on Serato's end as it detects the S9 is connected and sets the effects accordingly. I'm not sure what the best way of implementing a change would be in order to control everything in the most effective way, but if you guys provide Serato with your comments, I'm sure they can find methods of improving the interface with the hardware.
I just found out that if I use the S9 to activate the Serato effects I can add effects and control them through the SP1, we can turn them on and off and use the knobs. Still can't use them and the internal effects together but it's better than not having chain fx at all.
