XDJ-R1 and AAC files limitation

Hi.

I play a lot of self-encoded AAC files (.m4a extension) in my XDJ-R1. I play them without problems though stupidly enough the machine does it out of USB only, not discs. MP3, WAV and AIF it does from discs, but AAC it doesn't? Difficult to understand but hey, the manual says that so can't complain.

Manual also says that 'only up to 99 minutes of AAC files can be played'. This puzzles me. Could you please explain what this exactly means? Is it that it’ll play only the first 99 minutes of a (for example) long, 120 minutes AAC session file or is it that it can play an undetermined number of AAC files but up to a total of 99 minutes, then you should turn the unit off? If this limit is reached, what happens? Will the playback just stop, or will the deck freeze with that already mentioned high ‘horn-like’ tone, maybe? My deck keeps  freezing like that all the time and I’m desperate about the situation. I bet there’s no connection between the AAC limitation and the freezing as the deck fails like that with cds also, but any comments will be highly appreciated.

@Nico > The R1 is not capable of decoding AAC files from the optical drive, thus the ability to only load them from USB.

Any AAC file longer than 99 minutes can not be loaded, so a file of 120 minutes wouldn't load at all.

If you have more information about what you're doing when the unit freezes I could provide further assistance on troubleshooting.

Hi Pulse, thanks for your explanation. So I shouldn't have any problem whatsoever in playing all the 'one-song' AAC files that I want. They only have to be under 99 minutes long.

About the infamous freezing with high 'horn-like' tone I wrote here already some months ago, no solution / explanation given yet. Running latest version 1.12 of course. I only use the XDJ-R1 for deejaying with CDs and USB on its own, no pc no mobile, wi-fi off. Sometimes it freezes while playing a CD, sometimes from USB, sometimes when one deck is playing and I'm browsing tracks on the other. Sometimes it happens after one hour of use, sometimes after four. Absolutely random. I have access to two different XDJ-R1 and it happens to both of them. They are some 3 years old now, used but not too heavily, no use of effects, scratching etc. just gentle track by track playing... But these machines will let you down unexpectedly and ruin your gig. It's just not acceptable.

@Nico > Correct, you should have no problems with tracks of up to 99 minutes in length. It's a memory / buffer issue preventing loading of longer files.

I'm sorry to hear of the freezing, I know a few users have reported it but the engineers are unable to replicate it and with the randomness of its occurrence, you can understand why.
