Struggling to decide between Rekordbox or Serato.. Help Please.

Hi guys, after 15 years out of the game I've recently bought myself a ddj-sb2 controller just to get myself started again whilst i save for my next controller. I've used it with both the latest versions of Rekordbox and Serato, and i have to say i feel Serato feels and plays better to me. There's just something about Rekordbox that i don't quite like, although if it was the only option out there i'm sure it would be good enough. My problem is that now Pioneer and Serato have gone there separate ways, presumably the controllers are going to do the same. This leaves me with quite a predictament.. when the time is right for me to upgrade, which is probably within the next 12 months, will i still be able to buy the ddi-sx2 which is the controller i want to get next. Does anybody know if Pioneer are actually still manufacturing their Serato controllers or are they solely manufacturing their dedicated Rekordbox controllers. The reason i want to buy a SX2 is purely just to keep my options open as i may one day give Rekordbox another shot later down the line.

Any inside info on this would be great guys.. i'm so tempted to bring forward my planned upgrade as i'm worried their may be a shortage of Pioneer Serato controllers soon if they have completely stopped manufacturing them.

Many thanks in advance for your time.. :)

I just got my RZX and am about to return it tomorrow. The unit froze on me once in the first hour and the software crashed 3 times in the first hour. It also crashed more then 4 times while analyzing my tracks in export mode. Which never has happen to me till I upgrade to Rekordbox DJ performance software. I was ready to jump ship on serato but rekordbox made me realize how stable and resourceful it is. Serato has only crashed on me 4 times my whole life. I should have run the free trial first before I bought equipment to see how my laptop would take it. So I advice you to do free trial with video software and mix for a couple hour at HOME and if it dont crash on you then your off to a good start.

That sucks dude.. i would definitely return it and swap it for the ddj-sz, at least that way you can carry on using Serato. You'll have the best of both worlds. If and when Pioneer finally get rekordbox working the way it needs to maybe then you can cross over. This is why i asked the question because if Pioneer have stopped manufacing Serato contollers there is going to be a huge rush from within the dj community upgrading their controllers before they are hard to come by.

Speaking of your RZX.. i was at BMP 2016 at the weekend which is a huge dj tradeshow over here in the UK. Pioneer had a big stand There showing off all there latest controllers and got to demo the RZX and it froze on me a couple of times. It even froze on the pioneer sales guy when he was giving his big presentation lol. It looks an amazing piece of kit but its now very stable right now and needs some huge improvements in the firmware.

Anyways.. hope you get fixed up dude.. i also tried the SZ at the show and that worked fine. Let me know how you get on dude..

SERATO !!!

Returned my DDJ-RX because Rekordbox DJ is still in development. Exchanged it with an DDJ-SX2 with Serato and it works perfect.

You can also use the DDJ-SX2 witch Tracktor2 (No Timecode) And if you like I also works with Rekordbox DJ. I will give Rekordbox DJ another try late next year if it is finished by then

Serato DJ much better across the board than RB DJ (which is still relatively new)... am hedging on RB catching up soon and in the meantime only use it to manage my playlists/tracks to export onto an iPad to use with CDJs to play out (not RB DJ).

I do use the DDJ RZ at home for messing around/mixes etc.

i personally think the ddj-sx2 is the best all-round controller on the market (for the average joe) at the moment and as Pioneer aren't going to be making / announcing any new Serato controllers in the near future i think i best bring my planned upgrade forward before there becomes a shortage of them.

Watch this vid of the sales guy showing off their flagship ddj-rzx controller at the BMP/Pro 2016 trade show which i attended at the weekend and just watch how many times the guy press the buttons on the the touch screen and how laggy and unresponsive it is. You even hear him saying "we should have rebooted before we started filming" !! As if you can just do a quick reboot during a gig !!! I personally think Pioneer need to be careful and maybe not put all their eggs into one basket pushing this Rekordbox and get back the focusing on quality products that are reliable.. here's the link to the vid guys.. https://youtu.be/Pmo98hVDNg4

I has the DDJ-SX, SX2 and tested pretty much every Pioneer controller that has hit the market, the DDJ-RZ is the one that I think has what it takes to stand the test of time - we just need the RBDJ software to catch up with it!

The DDJ-SX2 with Serato DJ is pretty much perfect on all fronts, but I wanted to move to one platform and have taken the punt on RB (I still have an SX2 should RBDJ not move forward in the coming year to fall back onto - not ideal tho!).

I tested the DDJ-RZX and was not overly impressed with the screens and figure they will bin this and bring out a better version within the next 12 months so went with the RZ which seemed to be solid all round.

In my opinion the hardware is rock solid, the software is the problem, if Pioneer get's the hang of that... then it's limitless. They only need more time. So don't expect RBDJ to be pas good as Serato yet.

I don't expect any new hardware from Pioneer for Serato or other DJ software, they have there own now and it is not good for there own market. The best thing Serato can do now is make there software compatible with RBDJ Hardware, or pay allot of money for new Pioneer hardware, but this will make native supported Serato Hardware real expensive.

Time will tell.

I've actually had pretty decent luck with RBDJ. But, it does make my very powerful MacBook Pro work very very hard.. If you're not rockin' an i7 4th gen and up, you might have some issues. However, if you're serious about being a DJ, upgrading your laptop to an High end laptop is a "no brainer". I do music production and I'd say RBDJ uses about the same amount of resources as Cubase does. That's a lot.

I'm in love with the hardware, though. The platters are yummy and the mixer is delicious :-). It's like Djing on Nexus series stuff but with touch pads. I'm in heaven... Well almost! Would love to see more improvements on the software side.

Also, check out the new rekordbox 5 beta - the performance has been improved both for audio and video playback! I can't wait for the official release!

I'm quite pleased already. RBDJ 5 uses a lot ... I mean a lot less resources and the ability to change the font size is a big help too. The Key change sync is right on time also. I don't know If I'll use it but it's a really nice feature to have. Fixing the resource/latency issue has made the number change worth it. My fan on my MBP did not spin up to full speed like it used it. I can't wait to give this a test drive but I need to get some sleep first.

Rekordbox hasn't announced any plans to implement Ableton Link. Both Serato and Traktor have this feature.

Until Rekordbox gets Link support, go with Serato.

Ableton Link is in the list of requests, but we don't have confirmation of implementation, nor a timeline if it will be included.
