DDJ-1000 electrical noise in headphones

tl;dr - there is a loud electrical buzzing from the headphone jacks

Just got my DDJ-1000 (preordered on the day it was announced).

The center screen is great, and love the form factor however compared to all my other Pioneer gear there is a loud electrical buzzing when I connect my Macbook to the unit.

I've tried different USB cables, including the one that is included.  I've switched ports on my computer, even using another Macbook.  The electrical noise gets a lot more bearable when unplugging the USB,.   This does not happen on my DDJ-RZ, or my older DDJ-SX2 or DDJ-SR. Also, when pressing buttons such as "SLIP", I can hear a high pitch noise when the screens and lights on the unit flash to indicate SLIP mode.

My second issue is that the sound feels 'harsher' and more overdriven than my other Pioneer gear.  Was there a change in the DAC?

I have yet to use this unit out, but I'm concerned when hooking the outputs to a club PA this weekend that there will be electrical noise blasting out through the club's soundsystem.

Could this be because Pioneer opted to use a external wall wart that has 2 prongs (not a grounded 3 prong design)? I'm in the USA and ordered from an authorized US retailer.  Thanks

I also have the headphone noise on a brandnew unit. Same details as the other people here - not acceptable for a product with this price. Whats the status right now? Any news? Do I have to return the item to the dealer?

Send me an email aswell please, thanks in advance.

Well, Hello Erik,

I am just one of the guys here with same problem, but...

Keiko who has joined up here to assist us is very active and tries to help us all.
And so he did and does to me right now.

@Keiko: Once More, thanks for coming here to assist us.

Currently (and this is my fresh experience from today) the "normal" support located all over the world is neither informed nor aware of a problem and (from my discussion today on the phone) cannot (and does not) follow boards and threads.

So my advise would be, wait for Keiko to sort things out and get You straight to the right solution. As soon as Keiko reads this thread, he will try to reach out to You personally. Pioneer is definitly very much interested in getting this issue fixed, but support here (especially Keiko) and support (maybe next to Your location) need to get in touch with each other. They will provide You a professional solution.

I hope that my unit will be fixed soon or maybe swapped, but as I know now thru my regional support and Keiko, things are sometimes complicated and take some time to work out. Especially questions like, where shall the unit be shipped to ? Back to the dealer and then to support (which takes of course longer) or directly to support ? Who is paying the transfer and who is taking care of transport insurance ? And these are currently (from my current knowledge and todays impressions) the easy questions here.

My best advise would be, just be a little bit patient, Keiko will get in touch with You.

I regained my trust in Pioneer and their support, things will be fine at last.

Yours Nicos

Hey Nicos, thanks for your answer!

So have u been told wether this is a hardware issue and there will be a need to send it in or will it get fixed via software? My guess would be its a hardware fault..

Waiting for Keiko now to get in touch with me to get more details, but thanks for now :)

Hi Alexander,

Sorry I was busy at a congress today and couldn´t back to You.

Well, My unit was not fixed in any way because the service was not correctly informed about the issues. So yes, I was delivered the same unit without any kind of update or fix.

The Support will inform You directly how to proceed or will advise You, what information should be passed thru to the next support center nearest to Your location.

I know totally by myself that this will take long time, but I was assured that this will be the best way to get this all finally fixed.

@Nicos, thank you for the update!

Im really curious how bad this issue is. From the high level I guess its basically power supply for led lighting system leaks into the headphones channel. But this could be caused by multiple reasons such as - audio interface is not properly isolated, some power wire is located near the audio lines, audio interface and led controller share the same power, or something like this.

And the solution could be as simple as just moving some wire inside the unit and fixing it with a tape. Or it could require soldering or parts replacement and take much more time.

JFYI, I've found explanation of similar case:

The LED driver uses pulse width modulation to drive the lights in different colors. The 'carrier' frequency is likely several kHz square wave and the duration of each pulse changes to make each color. That frequency can ring back if current load is high for the LEDs.

Tomorrow I will send back my third controller. The noise in the headphones isn't the only problem there happens to be another problem. Whenever music is playing i get to hear a lot of distortion through all outputs: Headphones, master output. You can hear the distortion even when you recorded something through rekordbox so  I will put a sample of my recording so you can all hear the distortion. This is not the Pioneer quality that I am used to and if my fourth controller has the same issiues as mentioned I will ask my money back and look for another controller. At the price that I paid for this controller I want some decent hardware and good audio. I bought my first controller in march so this problem is going on for way to long and I am getting tired.

Dear Tom,

Sorry for getting back to You that late, I am very busy at work atm.

So, according to that file You have a real severe and from my POV complete different problem. It is not the problem we have here in the thread I thinl.

In order to get that problem fixed I would like You to get in touch with Keiko here, who is helping us all.

The fact is (and I know this now verified by the support here) that support and reseller are not really informed about all possible issues with new (and especially our) products.

I really do understand, why this is done that way.

To much information would lead into a total overload at the supportteams and resellers. And they be no longer so sure that the products by Pioneer are really reliable enough to be sold, they will lose their faith into Pioneer.

On the other hand: You can never say for sure, that an unit eg. produced in May 2018 is clean or even one from January 2018, it really depends on many different factors.

Only way to get that all fixed is to talk to support here directly, sending up such files, making screenshots. Sending back and swap units, well this does not really work.

In my case, my first try of fixing was sending back my unit without details from Keiko, even a link to this thread was not helpful, it came back as bad as it was on first arrival.

I was assured this monday that they applied the fix from the supportdocument provided by Keiko and now all should be fine. So, I keep my fingers crossed.

Don´t be mad Tom, we are all humans, and not everything is working out like planned everytime.

@all: Don´t lose Your faith, things are really making good progress.

Yours Nicos

@Nicos and @all

I would not be so optimistic ((

Ive got my DDJ-1000 from the service. They fixed the issue according to instructions provided by pioneer.

It is better than it was, but... Noise is still there.

Its level is lower, previously it was easily audible with 70ohm Sennheiser hd-25. And now with hd-25 i could barely hear it only in silent environment, but i can feel it still.

And, with in-ear monitors, noise is still audible (most of them has low impedance) and brings ear fatigue cause of its high frequency, even if its level is low.

It really could be some kind of design flaw, led driver freq leaks into headphones. This could be the case for a lot if not the most of the units. In some cases end user would not hear this cause of high impedance headphones or noisy environment.

I've exchanged first unit, sent to the service second one. But, at current moment i still have this quiet mosquito-like annoying sound (

I have the same issue, i got my unit yesterday, and it have that noise without anything plugged in, so, what can i do? sent it to waranty? what is the point to send it if the new unit can be affected to? I found a transformer with the same voltage of the original but 2A instead of 3A, so maybe i can try with it and discard that is a problem in the original transformer

Hello Andres,

Sorry to hear that you have a noise issue. May I ask you some questions?

Is the noise "electrical noise" only from headphones?

If so, I will send you an email to provide you with information so that you can receive appropriate support at an authorized service center.

A caution about the transformer:

We do not support any 2A adapter to be connected to the DDJ-1000. Please use the adapter included in the box of DDJ-1000. Please do not connect other adapter than the one included with the unit.

Thank you for your kind understanding and cooperation.

Source of this noise is NOT the AC adapter. For example, Master output sounds clean. Noise source is inside the unit and most probably is LED lights controller.

Ive recorded how my unit sound AFTER it was fixed by service.
Cause Im on business trip now and dont have any tools, recording was done using simple method. Ive connected my IEMs to DDJ-1000 and recorded with iPhone mic.
You could hear mic noise floor in the beginning, and then i bring IEM speaker close to the mic and you could hear high pitched noise. It changes with the time cause unit was in Demo Mode and amount of enabled LEDs changes.

Once again - this is REPAIRED unit  =)

Thanks for the reply Keiko, i decided to do not try the alternative power brick, and about the question that you make me, yes the noise is only on the headphones, i tried the booth and master out with my opera 515 dx powered speakers and they are clean. The noise in the headphones get mask when i reproduce something and raise the volume knob above 9:00 o' clock. So in a real world use i can barely hear it, but the thing than i am afraid of is if with the time the issue gets worse, or louder.

So i am in a big complain, i don't know if i should bring the unit back and get a refund or stay with the unit and get the risk of the problem get worse with the time.

The trouble that i have with change the unit is that in my country Chile, there isn't any pioneer authorised service center or even a authorised store, i bought the unit from a really little store who was the only store in the country who have the unit. And i don't know if they can give me any suport. The time is crucial, i have one day left if i want to get a refund.

I will wait for your email, and thanks for your time.

Hey Keiko,
Hey Alexander,

I have received my fixed unit today and I am nearly satisfied with my current status.

The "moskito-noise" has been clearly reduced but not been eliminated totally.
This is not possible I think due to some basic layout.
And I can confirm that in demo mode the noise is more audible than in performance mode.

From my point of view the level is nearly acceptable, I will do some more tests tomorrow when I am refreshed.

I did a first recording test some minutes ago, there was no distortion within this 10 Minutes test.

I will keep You all posted.

Hopefully, everything will be within my own personal specs.

Thanks for all support so far.

To all others waiting for some fix or support, they are really working on this.

Yours Nicos

I just got my unit back.

I'm not sure what the Repair Service in the Netherlands did but the noise is even worse than when I send it out for repair.

This is really disappointing.

For me the headphone static I had posted couple months ago is consistent with Alexander's post. Noise is very feint even with nothing plugged into unit and all volume levels down to zero. Sound like power related problem but defer to pioneer SME's

Pioneer engineering if you are reading the forums, I'm sure by now you have ascertained the root cause of this ongoing problem can share with us. Or give us the BUG ID so that we know what to articulate when the unit to sent in for repairs which appears the service centers may not be familiar with the issue at present time

Your prompt response is much appreciated

Hey Folks,

Good Morning from Germany again,

I will send my unit back again:

- Setting Color FX ==> Filter
- Dial down to most left (LowPass)
- Noise is clearly there and more present

I have done another test and routed the headphone output thru some uplink unit for wireless headset. This unit has a direct output on the front and adds a little bit pink noise to the signal sent in. After setting all gains to correct settings, the buzzing noise was nearly covered, but with the test above (Color Fx etc.) the noise was also back again.

It was also clearly there with my receiver for my wireless set, which I tested then at the and of all tests.

That's a pity, because my hope was that 80/90% fix would do the trick.
So well, let's go for round 3.

@Keiko: Please contact my reseller for swapping the unit, this one I have right now does not really satisfy me, not for this price and this brand...

And: the unit seems to have some other software / hardware issue right now...

I can apply any BEAT-FX from the mixer-section to channels 1 to 4, but not to the master. Booting unit, booting PC nothing changes this.

It is connected to a standard Desktop-PC Windows 10 1803 Rekordbox 5.3.0 and unit updated to 1.05.

I am really depressed.

So Folks, good evening Ladies and Gentlemen,

Next Round, next results.

The new issue (BEAT-FX) is gone.

Guess why: RB 5.2.2 does not support FW 1.05 completely, and my pinned-to-taskbar-link pointed to 5.2.2 ... not to 5.3.0... a cross-check made this totally clear.

This could be best described as a "LAYER-8-Problem" or "Between-Chair-and-Keyboard". Sorry, but I am only human...

@Keiko, You got mail on that already, working on the last issue...

So Folks, tomorrow night there shall be a package (very tiny) arriving at my place, maybe the final solution to buzzing noise...

I don't accept the fact that a buzzing noise which is not being amplified (You all can verify this) but injected AFTER the amp-section will drive us all mad.
I will search for additional solutions and I will find some, I know for sure.

Heads Up Guys, there is a dim light and the end of the tunnel.....

Yours Nicos
