Question About Roll Button

I have a DDJ-400 and I am very new to mixing and beat matching.

On some pioneer DJ boards, there is a "roll" button.  From what I've been able to gather, roll is similar to loops but that it continues playing the song in the background while your loop is "looping."  When you turn the roll loop off the song plays from where it would have been if there was no loop at all.

This differs from the beat loop button where when the loop is turned off the song plays from the point where the loop was started.  There is no roll button on the DDJ-400 but is there a similar feature I can use to make loops act like "roll loops"?

Sorry if this is a dumb question

You can, and there's a couple of options for you. The quickest / easiest is to go to PAD FX and you'll see SLIP LOOP effects; those will do a roll which allows the track to continue to "play" in the background.

The alternative method would be to engage slip mode (by clicking the SLIP button onscreen; there is no hardware button for this on the DDJ-400), and then pressing the BEAT LOOP pad mode button. Each of the pads would then engage a slip-loop.
