Rekordbox Android... What is going on?

Pioneer have sold me a dream.

The XDJ-RX2 promises to be the future of no hassle, laptop free DJing. Rock up to any party, club or festival and play a set.

But it's a lie - and Rekordbox is to blame.

I already have 2x CDJ900 NXS2 at home, plugged in to a WiFi network, so when I'm on WiFi, Rekordbox for Android will talk to them. It works, but is incredibly clunky, with the file management being particularly annoying. You can't choose which folders to import so it either imports every audio file on your phone (ringtones and voice recordings included), or you have to select which songs to import manually each time you want to import. The app has connection problems, is slow and unresponsive, and has display issues - But at least it will play a song on the CDJs.

The RX2 won't talk to my phone in any USB mode on any of the USB ports. It doesn't work in MIDI mode or Rekordbox mode. I tried exporting songs to a USB stick connected to my phone's OTG port but Rekordbox has no export option as far as I can see. There also is no ethernet jack on the RX2 so connecting to mobile LAN network is not happening.

There are many tutorials showing this all working fine on iOS devices. Why neglect Android? Your site says the app only supports up to Android version 6. I'm now on version 9. How haven't you caught up yet? Rekordbox Android hasn't been updated properly since it was released in 2012.

I have followed the instructions given about this topic in an official reply from Pioneer on this forum, install the link driver, but this is for connection with PC and Mac which completely defeats the object of Rekordbox mobile and the RX2 in one sweep. Rekordbox should be a quick swift experience, easy to connect and navigate. Prepare a set anywhere. More and more people are using phones for this kind of task now.

My question is why have you let down two otherwise excellent products, the CDJs and RX2, simply by not updating your app? They are faultless bits of kit, very well made, well designed and all let down by Rekordbox. I would like to know a release date for the new version for Android please. This needs to be fixed quick

You can thank Android fragmentation for the reason the development for that platform hasn't been greater than what it has.

Piopoop doesn't support Android versions above 6.0. They flat out refuse to work on it and create something that even just works SOME flagship devices. Pioneer? More like Pio-nearing-the-end.

Wow. So the official response from the multi million dollar, industry standard, world leading manufacturers in DJ equipment tell me to 'blame android'.
That says it all really. The app already functions as it should and performs the basic tasks (despite being very clunky), so how are you blaming it entirely on Android? This is a problem with Pioneer and no-one else.
And to the chap telling me i should use an iPhone... So you think after spending 1000s on Pioneer gear i should also sell my android phone worth 1000s so I can buy an iPhone just because pioneer can't be bothered to update their app? Excellent solution that mate.
I'll be buying Denon gear next time.

Nobody said you should sell your Android and buy an iPhone, but the fundamentals of coding for Android make it more difficult (and costly) to develop a consistently functional app thanks to fragmentation in the operating system, and the sheer variety of hardware configurations of Android devices.

Hi, I would like to know if Pioneer already reviewed the position for Android Rekordbox app maintenance. I understand the dev team may think Android platform is something more complex but IOS marketshare is about to be something smaller than Android OS (image bellow), so, as every other apps which are managing to keep their apps updates for Android, sound very non sense for me the reason above declared about Pioneer stopped giving attention for Android version off Rekordbox.

Please, can we expect any change on this or Pioneer will keep ignoring Android version?

Two reasons:

1) While the global handset market may be an 87% share for Android OS, the DJ market specifically leans much heavier to the Apple side. I have stats from our surveys but unfortunately I'm not able to disclose them with you.

2) This:

Only 41% of users are on the Android 9 (Pie), 12% are still on 8 (Oreo) and 10% on 6 (Marshmallow). And that doesn't even account for sub-fragmentation of carrier-customized versions, or other specific editions.

Whereas here's what Apple's ecosystem looks like:

76% are using iOS13, 11% are on iOS12.

And I'll also point out that Apple does that across about a dozen different hardware configurations, whereas anyone coding for Android has to ensure that their app is going to perform the same on hundreds of different handsets / tablets.

So yeah, iOS > Android.

Since Pioneer has stats in favor to decide to ignore android users the subject was answered.

Thank you for your attention!

My opinion is that you have to upgrade the android app and satisfy all of your users especially because part of us pay for membership other than the gear we',ve spent money to buy. The costs for the development of the app is not something the consumers should worry about. You offer a great tool using dropbox and syncing library on other devices. All the users must have the advantage of this opportunity, android or ios.

You're right - the cost of development isn't something that the user needs to worry about, but unfortunately the business decision is currently such that there are no immediate plans for a rekordbox app for Android.
