Rekordbox 5.8.5 on macOS Catalina doesn't recognize XDJ-RR (v1.03)

Hi there,

I got a new Mac a few months ago that runs macOS Catalina. I'm finally getting around to getting set up for DJing. When Rekordbox is in Export mode, it's not displaying the LINK button to connect to my XDJ-RR.

Specs:

  • macOS 10.15.4 (Catalina)
  • Rekordbox 5.8.5
  • XDJ-RR firmware version 1.03

I have tried the following:

  • Several reboots of the Mac and the controller :)
  • Installing Link Export driver (and uninstalling... and reinstalling)
  • Verifying the cable works by connecting the XDJ-RR to my old Mac using the same USB cable (the Link button appears just fine on the old system)
  • Disabling the macOS firewall and Wifi network
  • Uninstall / reinstall the XDJ-RR audio driver via these instructions (including approving via security settings, checking for disabled software, and verifying Rekordbox has Full Disk Access in macOS privacy preferences)
  • Deleting Rekordbox and installing fresh

Not sure what the issue is, and I've stumped a couple other friends that also use Rekordbox with Pioneer controllers. Anyone have any ideas for what else to look at?

Thanks!

If you installed the Link Export driver but didn't allow it through security (same as the audio driver), it would possibly be blocked.

Open the System Information application and on the left click on Software > Disabled Software to see if there are any Pioneer DJ items listed on the right.

The other reason the export mode wouldn't work is a firewall or other network shares that are interrupting the traffic.

Thanks for the response. Nothing is currently blocked. Disabled Software has no items listed.

Even with the firewall disabled, the Link button does not appear.

Do you know what port Rekordbox uses to communicate with the controller? I can look and see if any of my other apps use the same port. There's not much installed on the system, as it's mainly my media server, but a port conflict is certainly possible.

Do you possibly have file sharing or any other similar services enabled on your computer? Or perhaps a VPN?

No VPN. No file sharing. I don't even have Dropbox installed on that machine yet.

I just uninstalled Adobe Premier Pro, Photoshop, and Creative Cloud, as I don't need them on that machine.

After looking at lsof results, I noticed that Rekordbox and a process called "PSvLinkSy" were both using TCP 50000. I remembered that name from either setting up Rekordbox or installing the drivers.

Then I found this post:

https://forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000026943--MAC-4-2-5-Firewall-keeps-asking-everytime-for-PSvNFSd-app

describing how to manually add some more firewall exceptions. PSvLinkSysMgr.app and the Rekordbox app (with the app's icon) were already in there. From the contents of the Rekordbox app package, I dragged rekordbox (with the Terminal icon), PSvNFSd.dapp, and edb_streamd into the firewall exceptions.

As soon as I restarted Rekordbox, the Link button showed right up.

I have no idea why Rekordbox didn't see the controller with the firewall off. It's odd that nothing showed up in Disabled Software any time I checked, but maybe that list doesn't persist after a reboot. It's also possible there was a conflict with the Adobe apps that I removed. It's also possible that through the course of multiple driver uninstall/reinstall/reboot cycles, I missed a prompt.

Thank you for your help. This was driving me nuts!

Glad you were able to get that sorted -- even with the firewall off they should have been allowed to communicate. Might be a new quirk in Catalina that blocks certain ports or services even if the FW is off.
