E-8305 unsupported file type error

Troubleshooting steps I'd suggest:

- Does it happen consistently with the same song? In other words, does that song throw the error every time it's loaded on the CDJ, or only sometimes? If every time, check that the song is indeed compatible with the CDJ. It could be as simple as the sample rate / bit depth. If it's only sometimes, try reformatting your SD card, give it a new (unique) name, export the tracks again, try once more. If it happens again, try removing the album art (especially for the Beatport songs).

- Try linking the players in EXPORT mode. If the song loads over the link, then the problem certainly isn't the song itself, but rather the medium on which it was stored.

Which version of rekordbox are you currently using? Which firmware is on the CDJs? That could be it as well.

It doesn't happen consistently with the same songs. There have been songs that show the error on one USB stick but then play fine when played from another one.

I have USB sticks rather than an SD card. Would you recommend playing from an SD card then? (As per what Avalon Emerson is saying in the interview I referenced above).

I will try removing the album art but would still like to explore all the things that could be causing the issue as I am playing out on 20 April and would like to go into the gig safe in the knowledge that this wont be a problem.

I am sorry I don't understand what you mean by linking the players in EXPORT mode. I know what EXPORT mode in rekordbox on my computer is but I have never come across it on CDJs and cant find anything online about it. Can you provide a link to info on that please.

I have always updated to the latest version of Rekordbox as its released, so am currently up to 5.3. I don't know about the CDJs firmware as they belong to the club, they are not mine.

What is your opinion on this thread, which seems to identify a fault within Rekordbox from version 4.3 onwards as the source of the issue

I'm having the same issue coming up.
I've read these threads and gone through formatting multiple USBs,
Updating Rekordbox, re-analyzing tracks, checking the sample rate etc

It's happeniing with songs i've bought from producers on Bandcamp (some were of course free DLs too), so they should be trusted.

But this includes most tracks from an entire album downloaded come up with this error message, whilst a couple of songs still play.

This message has been a problem for me many times i've played and had sets lined up having to improvise and change set dynamics.

This issue has come up on NXS2000's, XDJ-1000's and CDJ900s.
I found that on the 900's, re selecting a track sometimes made it work.

Nonetheless, i have tracks that just insist on not playing regardless of their .WAV, 44100hz quality.

Sometime the error message comes up instantly, other times, the waveform quickly loads then become corrupt. I'm having trouble remembering if Error - Corrupt File has come up in the past, but right now, with using hired XDJ1000's and trying to work all the bugs, E-8305: Unsupported File is reading on close to majority of high quality downloads.

Many Bandcamp WAVs have an issue where they are encoded with a non-PCM stereo flag; the players thus think they're a different encoding type and can't play them. The fix is either to convert the file or to use a hex-editor to make the appropriate changes.

From an email I sent to the Bandcamp support team:

Bytes 20-21 are the wFormatTag – PCM should be 1, another value would be for some form of compression:

FE FF > 65534

So this file is not a PCM, it’s Wave Format Extensible. This basically allows for a multi-channel WAV file to be created. This isn’t a standard WAV file format, and while should be backward compatible, is usually not used for standard 2-channel audio.

I changed bytes 20-21 (wFormatTag) to a value of 01 00 (a decimal value of 1; meaning PCM), and the CDJ was then able to read the file:

So i have to go through each song individually (which is at least 100 of them, and not even entirely obvious to figure out which ones without testing on the cdj and noting it down first).
And put them through this codex hack styled software and change the numbers that are in that red box from 20-21 to 01 00....? Which realistically changes it from a WavFE to a PCM.


How exactly do i do this, if you don't mind?
This is just not something i was prepared to be savvy with.
Is there seriously no other way, and how am i the only one to have come across this problem that it isn't a more known about common issue?

Do i click save or something after or like, how the fk does this work bro lol.
Do i download this hacking thing, or is it a right click into some advanced info?
It kinda looks straight forward, but this is alien to me man haha

The easier way is to dump them all into an app to convert them (heck, even iTunes can do this) and convert them from WAV to WAV, it will create a new output file which will work.

If you don't want to recode or convert it, then yes, the only option is to manually edit the file.

Bandcamp is aware of this issue and is working to resolve it, but for now, this is the fix on our end.

Hi, Im the original comment poster from a couple of years ago. I started getting the same problem again after formatting my USBs, and worked out it was due to bandcamp WAVs. Another solution is to redownload your bandcamp tracks as FLACs instead of WAVs. Still lossless but doesn't seem to have the same issue - I haven't had any issue with FLACs yet anyway

Ok, so i reformatted the tracks through iTunes.

It only worked with some of them.

Majority of those tracks still come up with unsupported after reformatting, deleting the old files and re analysing them through RB.

Again, some files (usually atleast 1) from the albums work. They seem to mostly be the files with less data. I.e ambient or reprise tracks, but not always the case.

What's strange is some files load the data and some tack longer to "think" before collapsing. Like they try to load but then just give up. I'd assume if it was the wrong format, they'd read it straight away?

So from now on, i'll make sure to download all files from Bandcamp as FLACs and will probably just go re-download the ones that didn't work. So just letting you know that simply reformatting them as WAV again isn't quite it.

I am having an issue with this error (E-8305 Unsupported File Type).

I have bounced a drum sample from Logic Pro into a 24 bit depth and sample rate 44100 Hz - file format is WAV. The file is quite large 629MB and I am trying to play it in Rekordbox via Link through my laptop - decks are XDJ-700.

I have tried numerous fixes including changing the HEX code as per this post but still had no success - https://forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360059172771-E-8305-Unsupported-File-Format

Please could you advise on what I should do? The file plays fine in Rekordbox no success via the XDJ-700's which I am using.
