CDJ2000s Hot Cues not setting accurately for some MP3 files

I used to play just WAV files on my CDJ2000s but as my collection got bigger I ripped them all to MP3 @320K so they all fit on USB sticks and I can use the MP3 tags... BUT I've noticed on quite a few tracks now (but not all...), when I try to set a hot cue with the ABC buttons it misses the point I press it and actually sets the cue half a second or so before or after where I want it to be... it's a real pain. If I use the jog wheel to navigate to exactly where I want the cue point and set it it works fine.

Swapping back to the same track in WAV there is no problem at all - hot cues are dead accurate.I've looked at both versions in Rekordbox and they have the same beat grid and BPM...

CDJ firmware= v4.05

Rekordbox= v1.5.3

Anyone know what's going on and how to fix this?

My first reaction would be that it has something to do with Quantize and possibly the beat grids not being adjusted in Rekordbox, but you said the grids were OK so that is probably not the issue.

Have you tried setting the Hot Cues in Rekordbox?  If not, try setting them there and see if they go where you want.  It's a lot nicer to set them in Rekordbox because you can zoom into the waveform and line the Cue up visually exactly where you want it.

Thanks for the tips - will certainly try turning off quantize and see if it affects it. And yes they are fine if I set them in Rekordbox in advance, but I mainly put ordinary cue points in that way, and set the hot cues live as I'm going along, for re-edits on the fly etc...

It could be a version incompatibility between exports resulting in a change in the grid info.  I would wipe the export drive and re-export everything.

Thanks Pulse - I did format the USB stick before copying the MP3 versions over, if that's what you mean by wiping the drive?

I may try another USB stick too just  to eliminate that entirely... Another thing I've noticed accompanying this problem is that the MP3 versions of the tracks take longer to load on when I select one on the CDJ...

The only other clue I can come up with is that after coverting to MP3 I ran them all through MIxed in Key to write the key tags... wondering if there could possibly be anything in this that could have affected them...

Also wondering if I should up the firmware to the 4.11? Is there a list anywhere of the issues fixed in each firmware since 4.05,(my current firmware)

Thanks again,

john

My vote would be for you to upgrade the firmware, because FW 4.10 saw a major improvement to the Master Tempo feature.  4.11 will give you all the benefits of 4.10, so I say go for it.

Cool Fuse - firmware it is then... I'll try and do this today and post back whether it fixes it. If not I'll delete the Rekordbox d/b, re-import/re-export on a new USB stick and see what happens... I'll post back results - thanks again, love the help on these forums, another reason I use Pioneer :)

OK I updated to f/w 4.11 and it made no difference.

So I then opened Rekordbox and reimported a track that exhibits the issue, and deleted it from the USB stick - no change.

I then deleted the track from Rekordbox and went into Rekordbox preferences and switched off the "Prepare Quantize for CDJ use on file import", re-imported and copied to the same stick and HOORAY! Everything is good, hot cues are spot on again.

Just to be sure, and for your Tech Support info, I then turned the Prepare Quantize" option back on, and reimported... Hot cues are no longer accurate.

So now I can reproduce this for you if that helps - I am certain there is an issue with the Prepare Quantize function that is affecting the accuracy of Hot Cues set on the fly on the CDJ...

So for now I'm gonna turn off that option, delete my entire collection from Rekordbox and reimport it all to avoid this, so I can be confident my Hot Cues work again. In the meantime what functionality will I potentially lose - it doesn't affect the beat grid, so what actually does this option do?

Anyway hope this helps...

Well the price of turning off the "Prepare Quantize" option in Rekordbox seems to be slower loading of a track on the CDJ -the waveform especially takes AGES to load - and I feel it's affected the 4/8 beat loop function somewhat - some quick loops just seem to be way out.

Any news on whether this is accepted as an issue by tech support, and therefore whether it will be worked on? I'm almost ready to go back to WAV files for their faster loading and accurate hot cues even tho it means sacrificing the Tag info and carrying loads more USB sticks...

If you didn't FORMAT the USB drive, you may still be having problems due to the database.

Sorry Pulse I omitted that from the description, but YES throughout my lengthy testing and diagnosis the drive was formatted several times.  I also experimented using different USB drives.

You didn't accidentally upgrade to rekordbox 1.5.4, did you?

Hold on, I just re-read things and noticed this:

the waveform especially takes AGES to load

That would only happen if the tracks aren't analysed by rekordbox....??

Nope Pulse they are definitely analysed by Rekordbox and loaded from it... however you have got me thinking that what I need to try is uninstall/reinstall Rekordbox - I'm feeling quite certain the issue lies there. I also did my conversions to MP3 right after I had upgraded RB to 1.5.3 so it could well be related to that.

So I will uninstall RB/delete the database then reinstall and recreate the database by reimporting everything... any other tips about that?

And thanks so much for your continued support - Respect->Pulse and the Pioneer team
