The normal behaviour for instant doubles is to NOT load the hot cues, which is why the pads don't illuminate. That would also explain why a new one is set when you press it.
Not sure if anyone else has noticed this but when you do Instant Doubles on the XDJ-RX2 unit it loads the Hot Cues as well but the pads don't light up, then when you press them it will play from the Hot Cue but flash like you've just set a new one.
This was playing from USB's not connected to the computer.

No you misunderstand. It doesn’t set a new hot cue it plays the ones that are already there (even though the pads aren’t lit) however the pad light flashes like I’ve just set one.
Got an XDJ-RX2 recently (coming from the xdj-rx1), but in my case it loads the host cues on the tracks, not on the pads but when hit the pad on the second deck (the one loaded last) it does not play the hot cue where it is suppoused to be, it sets it on the current position and erases the previous position (good one). Also, when reloading the track (no matter the deck), it loads the version from the second deck (the one that did the mess)... very anoying as I use a lot instant doubles and as rx1 use to do well, should load the cues where they are, period!!! please, need an official answer to solve this or I will sell the equipment... very angry with that...
working with stand a lone usb (no laptop) and data exported from rekordbox 5.0.2 (last version)... rx2 firmware version is also the last one (1.20).
Please, give an answer on this asap.
Pulse, what's the point of doing instant doubles if the hot cues are not gonna be there???? or even worse, must set them at this specific moment???? and also worse, why It was working fine on the rx1... do you even dj bro????? don't talk about what you don't know please...
@Ivan > Memory optimization for performance.
Yeah, I do DJ, thanks for asking.
@Pulse... That's sooooooo great... o my god what a brilliant idea!!! is a victory the 0.5 o 1 seconds that we gain by losing the hot cues, versus the 20-30 seconds that we lose by setting then manually if we wanna do instant doubles with the rx2... OMG!!! thank God!!! I can believe that you are so smart!!!... or losing the 5-10 seconds that you have to lose by searching the point by navigating normal cues... besides having to set->lose a normal queue exactly the same place where a hot one is...
Allright Pulse... with the sarcasm out, please, to help me understand... can you please post a video or something were you play instant doubles and you do something great technically speaking (in the dj world) without the hot cues... come on impress me...
@Ivan > I don't need to -- the track LOADS INSTANTLY.
If you want to time out how long it takes for a song to load itself and all 4 hot cues, go ahead... that's not "instant." You do understand it's in the name -- instant doubles.
+1 for Ivan Palacios' concerns. I appreciate that Pioneer chooses to prioritize the speed of loading the track over the thoroughness of also loading all the hot cues. But there are two big problems with this solution, listed below.
But first: An EASY fix would seem to be as follows. Simply let the DJ decide choose whether to prioritize the speed of loading the track OR the thoroughness of also loading all the hot cues. Pioneer just needs to change the behavior of the HOT CUE AUTO LOAD setting so that "OFF" prioritizes speed of loading (how it currently behaves) but "ON" prioritizes thoroughness of also loading all the hot cues.
There are two problems with Pioneer's current solution of always prioritizing the speed of loading the track.
Problem 1: This creates a situation in which user data can be deleted. This has fortunately emerged as a big no-no in user interface design. It is so widely agreed-upon and adopted that it is no longer specifically stated as a guideline unto itself, but it certainly falls under many more general guidelines such as "prevent errors from occurring" in Nielsen's "Heuristic Evaluation".
Problem 2: This creates a situation in which the procedure (the task knowledge) for using hot cues becomes a lot more complicated. There is now a completely separate task hierarchy (in the language of "hierarchical task analysis") dedicated to using hot cues when the same track is playing on both decks. The DJ needs to learn that, in this one special case, he or she must now refrain from hitting the pads or else risk deleting his or her previously carefully-set and learned hot cues.
This means that the DJ now needs to either, make a special point to NEVER play the same track on both decks, or else keep a separate slot in their working memory (see Card, Moran, and Newell, 1983, "Psychology of Human Computer Interaction") dedicated to keeping track of whether he or she is doing so now and, if he or she is, then use this alternative special procedure that is dedicated to this situation.
An EASY fix would be to change HOT CUE AUTO LOAD so that the "ON" setting always loads the hot cues.
At one point, this was how it worked with the XDJ-RX1:
https://forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360001414323-XDJ-RX-not-loading-hot-cues-of-playing-track-if-loaded-onto-other-deck
Though I cannot recreate that behavior right now. With Rekordbox 5.4.2 and XDJ-RX1 firmware 2.21, the hot cues ALWAYS get auto-loaded, which is exactly what Ivan is asking for.
Best wishes,
Anthony Hornof (AKbeat)
