Audio dropout on deck1 when USB of deck2 gets connected/disconnected. And vice versa

Last night whole lot of audio drop-outs during my set...

2 CDJ-850's were connected with USB to my Mac, and I was working with the Rekordbox-performance mode.

In 1 CDJ was also a USB-stick from my friend, with some Rekordbox-analysed music on it.

When the LEFT deck was playing music (Rekordbox-performance) and my friend wanted to make a switch from the pc-connection to his USB stick on the RIGHT CDJ-850, the music from the LEFT deck dropped out (Rekordbox Peformance frooze for 2-3 seconds)

This happened every time we wanted to make a switch.

When the night was over, I wanted to try something. I was playing some music on 1 deck (Rekordbox Performance) and I disconnected the USB-cable from the OTHER deck. This also caused an audio dropout on the deck that was playing music...

Never had this problem in Mixvibes Cross, so it has to be a Rekordbox software issue I guess...

The way the audio driver works is that both CDJs are aggreagated into one "device" (as seen by the software). When one of the hardware players is either disconnected, or switched from PC mode to USB / CD, it will remove itself from the driver. How the software reacts depends on how it's designed / configured for monitoring the devices. I know Virtual DJ, and rekordbox don't like it when audio devices are removed from an aggregate. This is not a bug, but rather a recommendation that you don't unplug one of the CDJs or switch its mode while in use.

In an upcoming version of rekordbox, you will be able to simply connect your friend's USB drive to your computer and their export device will be visible within rekordbox DJ to perform directly from that device as well as your collection.

Sorry this isn't the answer you're looking for, but the technical complexity of not having the device disconnect is quite difficult to sort.

In Traktor, it is also no problem that you can plug/unplug a USB-cable of 1 deck. The music of the other deck just keeps playing flawlessly.

Why is this a problem in Rekordbox? I really want to begin to use this software, but it has to be bug-and crash-free...

Thanks Pulse!! I'm glad that I at least got an answer :-)

Just want to let Pioneer know what my experiences are :-)

I know it's best NOT to disconnect any USB-cables untill the next dj is fully switched to his CD- or USB-stick function. But in a loud, dark, busy, stressy environment, it sometimes happens...

Too bad you also get Rekordbox-freeze by just switching the mode on a CDJ...

This makes it impossible to switch dj's without audio-dropouts...

HOWEVER, this "bug" doesn't happen at home with my CDJ-400 players...

When one deck is playing with Rekordbox, I can easily switch between CD/USB/PC on the other deck, WITHOUT a Rekordbox freeze. But last Sunday-night, the bar had two CDJ-850, and with these players I did got a Rekordbox-freeze when switching modes...

Maybe a firmware-upgrade for the 850?? Or could this be because CDJ-400 use MIDI and the 850 uses HID??

Unfortunately it's not a firmware issue - it's hardware design. Those level of products are generally targeted at a userbase which wouldn't "switch DJs" mid-performance, so in consideration of cost factor, certain functionality is omitted.

You're lucky to not have had the CDJ-400's drop the connection as they also use HID in a single-USB controller design. Is that with the same computer? Sometimes it will happen with Windows but not Mac depending on the unit because of how they interface with the audio drivers and the audio drivers with the software.

Hey Pulse, remember this topic? :-)

I was wondering if this "issue" also happens with the more expensive CDJ's/XDJ.

Are the more expensive players "seen" by the computer as 2 seperate devices?

Let's say a dj is playing with Rekordbox dj, and I have to take over with my computer and also Rekordbox dj.

If the left CDJ2000 is playing through the speakers (with Rekordbox-dj of the first dj) can I then unplug the USB-cable of the right CDJ2000 and plug it in in my laptop so I can takeover???

@Kristof > With higher-level players, they have dual USB chipsets (one acting as a "host" for USB drives, one acting as a "device" for communicating with a computer), allowing you to switch modes on the player without disconnecting.

If you have created an aggregate, the computer will have 2 (or more) audio devices as one "sound card" used by the software. When you switch a lower-model player with only one USB chipset, it has to disconnect the USB "device" to switch to "host" mode, and that disconnection removes it from the aggregate, thus causing a problem.

If you want to switch from one DJ to another, I don't recommend doing a one-at-a-time disconnect; switch from DJ "A" to playing from a USB drive, disconnect from DJ "A" and connect both USB cables to DJ "B" and then mix from your computer.

Hey Pulse,

Thanks again for the explenation!

last night I met a guy who also works with the Rekordbox Performance Mode. He uses a controller Traktor Control X1 and for the audio he uses the Traktor Audio 8.

I use a Pioneer Ddj WeGo or my CDJ400's for controlling Rekordbox, and I use the Traktor Audio 2 Soundcard.

Guy from last night said it was NO PROBLEM for him to connect or disconnect his Control X1 during his gig, because the audio is routing through the Traktor Audio 8.

In my personal setup, the audio is routing through my Traktor Audio 2, but I WIIL GET audio-drop out when I connect/disconnect a controller (WeGo or a CDJ400)...

How can this be? Is the Audio 8 more supported/compatible than my Audio 2?

Maybe the new Interface 2 can solve my problem?

The X1 doesn't have an audio interface, so there is no change to the audio configuration in the computer. If you are connecting / disconnecting audio devices during a performance, it should be expected that there is a possibility of a temporary audio interruption, and it is not recommended.
