Music files management help!

I have got quite large digital music collection organised by genre in a single Music folder, in every genre folder there are many subfolder for albums, singles and compilations. Needless to say only small proportion of the music there will actually be in my RB collection, the rest I would like to keep for personal listening.

And here my problem arises, I will soon need to move my collection on to an external drive because I am running out of HDD space, but I cant seem to find a way to do it without loosing my RB files. Keeping the collection on my computer is also not an option. And I can't just go and manually find and copy all files I use in RB as they are scattered among hundreds of folders and thousands of files.

I have tried exporting my RB playlists to USB, then changing a the name of my Music folder, so that all tracks in RB will appear as missing. Trying to relocate all the files from the exported ones is nearly impossible, because they will be in different folders so I can only do just couple at a time.

Putting all of the already exported tracks into one single directory and then trying to relocate them in RB doesn't fully work either, as many of the file name would have been shortened and for some reason, which means I will need to relocate them manually.

I am looking for advice how I could work this one around. I am not using ITunes, I prefer working strictly in RB. Usually when I get new music I import it in RB listen through it there put cue points mark moods and tracks I don't want to keep I would delete straight away form the programme.

Thanks,

Iliya

Why not just move the entire Music folder to an external drive? That's how I do it all - too much music for the internal, so I store it all on a portable 1TB USB3 SSD drive and keep a copy locally (on a 4TB desktop drive), as well as a copy in the cloud (two actually, one in Dropbox, the other in Backblaze).

Relocating everything to the external (including your rekordbox database) would allow you to move it from computer to computer as well. The relocation process would be simple as it only needs to change one portion of the path.

I don't like the idea of constantly carrying my SSD with whole of my music, in case it is lost of damaged. I am currently looking for some scripts that can do the job using the file paths I export into .xml.
