XDJ-RX2 - USB Stick Problems

Hello,

I just bought the new XDJ-RX2 and trying to use it.
But unfortunately there is a big problem loading tracks from any USB-Stick.

I tried it already with 3 different models, all formatted in FAT32. Only seldom it works, most of the time it says "Now Loading" in red letters, but doesn´t load the track. So the whole controller is more or less useless.

I just wonder if I have to send it back to the shop, or is there a way to fix this?

Thank you for advise.

Hello all,

XDJ-RX2 engineers are concerned about the feedback you kindly reported.

Will you please send us the problematic tracks and database in order to analyze them to identify the root cause of your issues? Please upload the files to Dropbox or similar file sharing service and attach the link here.

Thank you very much for your kind cooperation.

Yes.. but nobody could help there as well, as it seems. And you can read this kind of problem quite often in the forum.

I must say I´m really dissapointed by pioneer and the product. How can a product in this price-range be so buggy? .. especially in the most important part, which is "loading a track".

I cannot play a set with this device if I always have to be afraid "will it work this time"?
Any cheap midicontroller has no problems with reading USB-sticks, but the latest Pioneer products can´t handle it?

.. what is the solution .. sending it back getting the money back and buying something else .. for a much cheaper price and way better technically?

USB-Stick reading problems in 2017 .. this is Pioneer?

Hello,

one USB stick is from Transcend (USB 3.0), the other one is from the Electro-Discounter, just bought it 2 days ago, should be up to date.

Both USB-sticks are formatted in FAT32.

XDJ-RX2 recognizes both sticks and their playlist, all seems fine at the beginning.

When I click to the playlist and there on a track to load it into deck1, for example, for 2-3 seconds everything seems to be fine, it shows the track and the visual waves of it, but suddenly the visual track disappears and instead "now loading" appears on the display in red letters, more or less forever, that´s it, more doesn´t happen.

Please see the picture:

Hello Gerhard,

does this happen to all your tracks? We had the same problem with some of our MP3 tracks, too.

After fixing the incorrect time length of the MP3 tracks this issue does not occur again. The issue wasn't USB stick related.

Hello,

yes, this problem occurs unfortunately with any track.

Sometimes (after switching on) it´s possible to load 4-5 tracks in a row .. into both of the decks .. then suddenly one deck "crashes"..  I just see the white timecode "00:00.000" flashing (and the usb-Button next to the display also flashes), .. that´s it, game over, no matter what I try to do, this deck is gone.

Most of the time the deck where I loaded the first track is still working, so it´s the "second" one that crashes.

I doubt that there´s a problem with the mp3 files, then the file shouldn´t work on the other deck, or at the beginning, when switching on the controller.

Seems to be a major software-issue, on my controller.

I tried the follwing USB-Sticks (all in FAT32 format):

  • PNY USB 3.0 (High Performance / 16GB)
  • Kingston Data Traveller 50 (USB 3.1/3.0/2.0 / 16GB)
  • Transcend USB 3.0 (16 GB)
  • USB-Stick vom Electrodiscounter (4GB)

With all of them exactly the same problem.

Hello Gerhard,

all my USB drives has been formated by H2Format.

I tried lots of different USB drives (2 GB up to 128 GB) without a problem on the XDJ-RX2.

Please could you check your tracks with MP3val. Is it poosible to share some of your tracks.

Hello,

well the whole system crashes on a regular basis .. the decks are "freezing" .. and nothing works then anymore ..

It´s not the problem that the RX2 can´t read just a few mp3 files.

And before the deck crashes I can play all the tracks without any problems, this shouldn´t be the case if the file is corrupted.

Anyway I will download your suggested software and check it .. keep you updated!

.. when I play the same mp3-files from recordbox-software (over MIDI) .. also no problems ..

@BTH: Thank you, MP3val seems to have solved the problem.

I had songs in my playlist that had the following problem shown in MP3val:

Example: "Wrong number of MPEG frames specified in Xing header (0 instead of 14823)".

When such a song was selected, the deck couldn´t read it - like if it´s in an endless loop - and immediately "crashed" .. means only a restart of the whole system worked.

After I repaired the files, in MP3val, no problem anymore.

@Pioneer Team: maybe it would be a good idea to update the software in that way that - if the controller cannot read such a file - just make it "not readable" instead making it crash the whole system.

(Especially if several DJs are using the controller, there always might be one having such a file on his USB-stick.)

Hope that helped.

Hello Gerhard,

IMHO the device is quite sensitive in terms of wrong MP3 headers.

From my experience checking tracks which MP3val is mandatory for the XDJ-RX2 at the moment.

But why does rekordbox not vadildate the MP3 headers?

In my experience, the two main culprits for these kinds of issues are bad drives, and bad data. You've nailed the 2nd one with the bad XING headers.

rekordbox doesn't provide any kind of data verification because there are simply too many different ways a file can be bad, and those ways differ from an MP3 to a WAV to an MP4 to a MOV to a FLAC... etc, and applying those checks can be very time consuming.

@BTH: .. difficult to say, but with Rekordbox (connected via MIDI/Laptop) it worked, maybe it has a better error-handling when it´s read by the laptop.

@Pulse: Well, I know what the problem is now, but as I wrote, if other DJs are playing on the device, and have an issue with a mp3-file, the whole system crashes. Everyone who experienced that on a set in front of a party-crowd knows how nice this it is ..

Infinite loops, that crash everything, are never a good idea.

Maybe you find a way to sandbox files who are not perfect, and which is not so time consuming, or just make a timeout-break, if a file isn´t loaded within a certain time, so it´s possible to choose another file .. without switching everything off and on again.
