CDJ900's with rekordbox as a midi

Good day,

forgive my ignorance but I rather seek clarity. Please bear in mind the equipment I have is for mobile DJ application.

I have a pair of 900's with a DJM700 mixer. I'm currently using external HHD that has most of my music analyzed with Rekordbox. (at the moment total number tracks analyzed are +/-8900).  HHD also has additional music (about 20gigs), which are background music use & non essential stuff that are not used during the main dance segments of functions. I am currently using a 320gig HHD (USB2.0) and total space used is around 128gigs.

Is there any way I can connect my laptop that has my rekordbox bank & use it in midi control functionality on the 900's, instead of using the external HHD.

I was looking at Serato & Traktor but the interfaces are pretty expensive.

yes, use ethernet cables and a switch and link them to your laptop,  link button will appear on the bottom left of RB and then you can drag and drop tracks from RB to the CDJ's or use the cd's to browse the library. Its not MIDI though, its just using your laptop as an external hard drive more or less

As @BriChi explains, it links the player via ethernet -- but it's important to note this is NOT MIDI. If you have any questions about the process, please let us know.

Thank you BriChi & Pulse. Much appreciate and this is more or less what I was looking for. Will give it a try on Sunday. Got functions from today & will rather glitch learn off site.

Pulse, since you offered :-), can I run a few questions by you:-

  • any cue points saved on rekordbox, will it automatically pick up on the CDJ
  • any cue points saved on CDJ, will it reflect & then save on rekordbox

Main question, what's the difference between using rekordbox as the external HDD and MIDI, given the equipment I have?

Yes, but you must first re-export (it doesn't export the files, just the updated database). If you make changes on the USB device, when you connect it back to rekordbox, right-click on the device and click "Update Collection."

The main difference between using an external HDD and MIDI is that with the external HDD you don't need to use your computer, but MIDI requires a computer as it's just a control signal.

@Vishnu > Sorry, one of your replies was lost in the transition to the new support software:

@Pulse -> ok finally got around to connecting the laptop with the switch hub on the 900's. Was able to locate music and drag 'n drop music to each player as indicated on the bottom of the laptop screen.

However, I wasn't able to use the wave guide on the Rekordbox screen and see the tracks played on the laptop. When I drag a track to the player on the screen, it doesn't show up on top of Rekordbox where it has deck A. I did change the screen view to "Two Players"

Soooo, the pro-link is only a cumbersome form of an external HHD (with all the cables & switch hub), or am I doing something wrong.

Was hoping to be able to use the full facility of Rekordbox, the wave guides, search facility together with the 900's instead of going out an purchasing the Rane SL2 or Traktor.

rekordbox is not a DVS software, so your assessment of its role as a fancy HD is correct, but not entirely accurate - you get much more functionality in having rekordbox as your source vs. an export USB device.
