Hey guys, I am a Serato DJ user and I'm giving the new Rekordbox a try. My downloaded MP4 video files seem to play OK in the software. Some simply don't load. I get the error message that the file format is not supported.
As a matter of fact, that is the case with ALL my music videos that were personally ripped from DVD by using Handbrake with a Serato SL preset.
"The Settings in the preset are for an MP4 file with H.264 codec, an average bitrate of 2000kbps, a decomb filter and a keyframe rate maximum of 25."
MP4 file (from Xtendamix.eu) that is OK:
video - 3201 kbs, 640*480 (4/3) at 25.000 fps, AVC (PAL) (Baseline@L3) ( 1ref frames)
audio - 256 kbs, 44.1 khz, 2 channels, AAC (LC)
MP4 file (from Xtendamix.eu) that is NOT okay:
video - 3248 kbs, 640*360 (16/9) at 23.976 fps, AVC (main@L3) (2 ref frames)
audio - 320 kbs, 44.1 khz, 2 channels, AAC (LC)
ANOTHER MP4 file (from Xtendamix.eu) that is NOT okay:
video - 3424 kbs, 640*360 (16/9) at 23.976 fps, AVC (main@L3) (2 ref frames)
audio - 320 kbs, 44.1 khz, 2 channels, AAC (LC)
MP4 file (ripped from DVD) that is NOT okay:
video - 2000 kbs (VBR), 720*560 (1.286), at 25.000 fps, AVC (main@L3) (4 ref frames)
audio - 329 kbs, 48.0 khz, 2 channels, AAC (LC)
What is causing this problem? I want to use MP4 files in both softwares: Serato, and Rekordbox (to play audio only of course).
If I have to convert all my DVDs again (sigh), what settings for framerate/bitrate should I use then?
Please don't tell me I will have to wait and pay for the video plugin (that has yet to be released) to be able to load all my music video files...
While it may play the audio from that file, MP4s are only a WRAPPER for the contents, and typically the audio codec used for MP4 is AAC, which the software DOES support. It could be that the other video files are using a different audio codec or possibly a bit/sample rate which is not supported.
But my official answer is going to be quite simply, MP4s are not a supported filetype, sorry!

Rekordbox doesn't play audio from MP4, Its not on the supported file typer list from the following that are supported
MP3
AAC
WAVE
AIFF
FLAC
APPLE LOSSLESS
There are programs that easily extract the audio from videos like Garage Band (if you're on a mac) so you don't have to re-rip the original dvd
Rekordbox DOES play audio from MP4. At least it does in my version of Rekordbox 4! In export + performance window.
i was going by their support list.
I tested a few and its hit or miss, some say wrong format others play fine. The difference i see between them is the audio was AAC 44K on the playing one and AAC 48K on the one with the error
same Problem here Windows 8.1 Rekordbox4 , i have around 15k Videofiles from xtendamix , promoonly and much self ripped with handbrake Serato and also TRAKTOR play them without any Problems (Traktor Audio only) Rekordbóx some yes some no i cant see what files not playing and others do ....
please investigate that rekordbox is a no go for me with such a inconsistent mp4 decoder
Only a couple of my Xtendamix downloads cannot be played. Most of the problematic files are DVD rips. So it must be a codec problem...

Has anyone had any success with the mp4 files? Mine started working but then i updates my laptop and now all I get is a black screen in rekordbox video... argh
@Bern > Thanks to the inclusion of the video plugin, rekordbox can now handle several video filetypes, even if you don't have the video Plus Pack.
If you are unable to get certain files to play, please check them with a codec tool to analyse which codec was used, then verify that codec is available within your computer.

The mp4 files I have work fine with windows media player and Serato Video (apologies for the inclusion of that example) so I am going to presume the codec is installed.
I have the plus pack installed and I even went to the lengths of removing my video files from my collection and I still get the same outcome. When I play the files in RN dj the audio plays, but not the video.

ok I own your FLAGSHIP CONTROLLER RZX....AND THIS THING DOES NOT LOAD MY VIDEOS.... SOME I CAN SEE BUT MOST OF THEM I CAN'T I HAVE MET ALL THE SPEC'S FOR THIS MACHINE (I JUST HAVE WINDOWS INSTEAD OF MAC) BUT STILL HAVE PROBLEM WITH MP4 AND THE ONES THAT DO PLAY I GET DROPOUTS IN THE AUDIO AND IF I DO FIND A GOOD ONE THAT I HAVE TESTED AND IT PLAYS ALL THE WAY THROUGH IF I GO BACK AND HIT CUE POINTS TO MOVE AROUND IN VIDEO OR EVEN LOOP IT THEN THE VIDEO DOESN'T PLAY CORRECTLY ANYMORE......NOBODY SAID I GOT TO KNOW WHAT CODEC IS PLAYING I SHOULD BE ABLE TO LOAD VIDEOS AND BE DONE WITH IT...MY VIDEOS ARE COMING FROM YOUTUBE WHICH I PURCHACED THE LICENCE FOR SO I CAN GET THE HIGH END VIDEOS

there are a few videos that load and when i look at them in the folder the icon shows the video...the other ones shows the windows default icon but if i click on them WMP will open them.
also is it possible to open animated gif files.... that would be a option until the other issue gets resolved
I'm guessing the problem is more related to how the videos were encoded. MP4 / M4A are wrappers for audio and video codecs within. Could you post one of the problematic video files for us to check out?
