Digital Output Workaround via Rekordbox/XDJ1000/DJM-900NXS?

Hey Everyone,

My one grip with the great XDJ-1000 is the lack of Digital Out. To bypass this limitation, I've been running the XDJ-1000s in HID mode under Traktor while using built-in DJM-900NXS audio interface to output the audio from Traktor via Audio over USB, thus keeping the signal in the digital realm to bypass any potential D/A signal loss (sadly, I'm a rare breed that can hear the difference).

Traktor's behavior has been unpredictable lately with the last couple versions. Most recently, Traktor disconnect the HID connection during my live performance, which in turn stopped the music. It sucked.

I now want to use Rekordbox exclusively but want to avoid using the RCA outputs of my XDJ-1000. I'm looking to emulate the connection behavior of the Traktor signal setup.

My question: is it possible to use the XDJ-1000s to control Rekordbox but have the audio routed to the DJM-900NXS via Audio over USB? Basically, the XDJ-1000s would function as a pseudo-HID device (sans audio output from XDJ RCAs to the DJM-900 RCA inputs). The audio would be sent directly to the DJM-900 from the CPU (via USB).

Perhaps by setting the Mac OS audio device to the DJM-900 and then using the DJM-900 utility to route the output to one of the open mixer channels?

P.S. FWIW, the inspiration for this potential approach stems from this forum post: https://forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/communities/public/questions/203040279-DJM-900-digital-out-Mac

not in Rekordbox 3.0 or pervious but i would have to assume that will be the behavior when Rekordbox 4.0 comes out, you should be able to map the audio right to a DJM900 if they are trying to be like traktor and serato

Thanks BriChi, I had a feeling that was the case. I certainly have high-hopes for Rekordbox 4.0 and am impressed with Pioneer's aggressive pro-DJ campaign as of late. It's a breath of fresh air, as I've been getting more and more annoyed with Traktor and Native Instruments' lack of transparency, communication and customer service...and this coming from someone who owns every NI product on the market (sans the S8 and D2 which are a bit meh IMO). Cheers.

If you can say to me without stretching the truth even 1% that you can tell the difference between an analog RCA lead between the player and mixer and a digital connection, I want your ears.

The vast majority of listeners (and I'm talking 999/1000) would never hear the subtle difference. Even pros can be fooled. Don't fret it, connect the analog-outs and focus on your DJing instead of the connections and a contorted audio routing. ;)

Ha! I appreciate your feedback @Pulse. Admittedly, there are only certain instances where I can immediately hear an audible difference and, being realistic, none of it really matters when ultimately the music is going to be cranking to a degree where the crowd could really care less how the signal is getting there. I think it's my own snobbery that's the culprit, as when producing I tend to try and keep everything as pristine as possible when jumping between the A/D D/A realms...hence my love Apogee products and high end monitors/headphones. I suppose it's as they say, the first step is admitting I have a problem... ;-) For more own sanity it's probably best I separate my production brain from the DJ one. Cheers.

I'm totally not blaming you for wanting the best quality signal path - I'm an audio snob myself, but I have to lower my expectations when dealing with things like MP3s and what the public expects. ;)

If there is a solution for anything better, chances are I wind up posting it here somewhere. :D

Strange move for the xdj 1000 to not include digital outs especial as nearly all high end mixers are now fully digital, only reason I stuck with my cdj's. You have a total of 3 a/d conversions this way. Xdj digital > analog then mixer input stage > mixer digital > mixer analog output stage. Switching between analog and digital inputs from the cdj's is noticeable on my xone db4, but the analog signal still sounds fine, just seems silly to add 2 layers of conversion considering how cheap a digital out would cost to implement.

@Shane > It comes down to a simple answer: cost. It's not cheap or simple to implement. There is a target retail price established when a product is developed and in order to achieve that target, sometimes features have to be omitted.

For the majority of users of this product, there are few who would would perceive the difference between analog and digital connections between the XDJ-1000 and the mixer.
