Manage files format within Rekordbox

Hello all,

I was wondering if there is any plans to supports files conversion within Rekordbox?

I have a lot of files in AIFF, FLAC and ALAC but I don't know exactly which files is in which until I try to load them into a legacy CDJ and get an error message in the middle of the set...

it happens more and more these days and it would be very very handy to be able to convert them directly within the app or why not directly during the exportation.

Thanks!

As technology has improved, we've been able to provide support for more formats, including lossless WAV and AIFF, and on the CDJ-2000NXS2, we added support for FLAC and ALAC.

There is no transcoding export engine in rekordbox, such a feature would only lengthen the export process, and while I understand that you'd love to simply click-and-export to a universal format, unfortunately there are also additional technical hurdles which may transform your nicely aligned cue points and grids for your FLAC file to slightly different places on an MP3. Personally, I'd rather Pioneer DJ not include a feature that made things worse by trying to make them better. Yes, it's more time consuming for you to create a second version of that file, then check the beat grid, create your hot cues, memory points etc. again, but if it means they'll be accurate, it would be worth it.

In the "info" window on RB you can see the type of file.

In a more "in your face" style, you can also right click on any column title and select "File Type" to have it shown so you won't select a wrong file type when preparing your set

@Tiago: Yep I know, but when I find out a track is in ALAC, I need to go back to iTunes, find the track, convert it in AIFF, remove the ALAC version, re-import it into Rekordbox, then include it again in my playlist. Last time I checked I had a hundred or so ALAC / FLAC files and I can't do that for each.

Would have been good to have a "right click --> convert to AIFF" directly into Rekordbox. This transition NSX / NSX2 is a real pain in the ass and I'm afraid is going to last a while...

Absolutely. But my answer was just intended as a workaround.

The convert would be a nice to have feature but TBH with so many settings to deal with (just look at audio conversion settings) I don't think it'll be done nor it is RB job to do it.

I'm also not sure about tags being kept (hot/memory cues or loops surely won't) so you'll have to do it by hand if so.

Then there's the possibility of a bad mistake to happen like converting lossy to lossless and to me that's a huge NO :)

If your files are lossy then they don't need to be transcoded, I was thinking about the lossless files to be transcoded into AIFF (tags are kept for sure but cue points....) and there aren't a lot settings.

But as you said it might be troublesome to implement so I will simply take a day or two and transcode all my lossless into AIFF (and probably buy a new hard drive...) which is a bit a shame as we now finally have lossless compatible CDJs T_T

+1 for this feature request, really. Limited formats support in Rekordbox is currently the MAIN DRAWBACK that keep me away from using Rekordbox as my main DJ software.

I'm using more lossless files than MP3 nowadays (60% lossless in my collection). My collection of songs isn't only played in clubs where the soundsystem is most of the time mono and suboptimal, it's also my main music source at home and while on the go where I request "audiophile" quality. When I buy a new record, the first thing I do is to archive it digitally using a lossless format. Theses arguments for closing any debate regarding lossy vs lossless formats, which isn't the topic here.

I store my music both on physical storage and on the cloud, they both give me constraints regarding the file format. For instance, I'm able to play my entire collection online if I'm using WMA lossless format. In other words, this let me play my purchased and digitalized records from my smartphone or from work.

When I'm asked to play in a club, I'm constrained to prepare a playlist out from Traktor (which supports all major file format hence IS my main DJ software for now), then convert the playlist to a format which would work on all CDJ players , then use Rekordbox to write this to a "Rekordbox-ready" USB key. I hardly know which player I'll get in a club, I can only request for "Rekordbox compatibility".

I would really love to transfer my entire collection to Rekordbox if it would support more file formats, such as my WMA lossless for instance, to cope with constraints given my cloud service. FLAC is also a good alternative for lossless, still it's not supported in the vast majority of CDJ players "old-generation" that you would meet in clubs.

So why not adding a transcode option to Rekordbox to be able to play any format to any CDJ you connect to it? You could store you collection using FLAC and be assured to play it on a CDJ 2000 first generation. For implementation details, since Rekordbox is wired to a CDJ over a normal network with proper communication speed (100mbps?), it may not be impossible to transfer a transcoded WAV or AIFF from a FLAC, ALAC or WMA lossless that sits into your Rekordbox collection IN CASE the connected CDJ doesn't support the original file format (given that transcoding time on a recent computer is generally not more than 5-10s). Hence problem solved for everyone.

Any news regarding this feature? How long are we still going to get these "error" message at the worst moment?

Thanks!

For the formats like flac and alac, it would be so simple to write them as wav when using export mode, no transcoding needed at all.

I'm not sure I agree - when you are playing the track in RekordBox, whatever format it's in, it's being converted to its PCM equivalent.

This could very easily be streamed to WAV (infact this code is already in RB as the Record Mix feature) and wouldn't affect the timings at all.

I came over from Traktor where I exclusively used FLAC - sure I can play it all on my RZ, but if I do want to play on other equipment, I will need to manually convert and re-hot cue everything.

I think if RB (or even the Nexus 2 range) supports one format to play, then they will expect a lot of DJs to use this format, which also means there should be an easy way to convert formats for their older systems.

Same here, I would love to be able to convert lossless to AIFF during the exportation, never mind the cue points !
