DDJ RX & Maschine as a standalone

Hey everyone,

I am thinking of upgrading my current setup with a DDJ RX. I have a couple questions with regard to the unit itself.

I like using my Maschine as a standalone unit for finger drumming and live sequencing. I know that the RX offers such capabilities but I want to combine the two. My question is, can I route Maschine to output to one of the controller's channels, like I can do in Traktor using DJM 850/900/2000?

Also, are the beat effects post-fader?

Thanks in advance,

Angel

Unfortunately not, as the DDJ-RX has a 4/4 audio interface, and it's set up for a stereo pair to master and a stereo pair to headphones.

Your best bet would be to use another audio device and send that ouput signal to a line-input on the RX.

Hi again, just a thought.

Would I not be able to aggregate the RX sound card with sunflower and then route the Maschine output to one of the channels of the unit?

Theoretically it should work fine but maybe I'm missing something?

Cheers

What else are you doing with the RX? Are you using either / both of the channels of the unit at any time? Are you using it with another software or stand-alone?

Thanks for the quick response.

I currently use 3 CDJs 400 and an external mixer with traktor and use maschine on channel 4 for finger drumming etc.

I want the controller to substitute the CDJs and the mixer because I wish to convert to Rekordbox DJ.

So, it will essentially be channel 1,2,3 as track decks and channel 4 as "live input" for maschine.

Sorry, I had just been working on a XDJ-RX issue, so my comments in the last question don't really apply. :p Of course you're using it with rekordbox!

So here's the crazy thing I just tested...

Opened rekordbox and assigned the DDJ-RX as the outputs. As previously noted, because of the way the unit is configured, it's basically set up for headphones on one pair of outs, master on the other pair. So rekordbox is playing over the RX and everything works as expected.

Next, I launched Ableton Live and configured the DDJ-RX as the output device, with all four outputs available. I set the master to 1&2 and the cue to 3&4, and in this configuration, I was able to send audio from both applications to the hardware. So effectively within Ableton, I could adjust the audio levels there (other hardware was necessary to do MIDI mapping as the MIDI from the DDJ-RX was being locked to rekordbox), but the good thing was no additional channels were being used on the RX because the audio was being sent directly to the master audio feed.

Ha, that's pretty cool. I imagine this opens a whole new realm of possibilities :p

If I understand this correctly the RX becomes a pass through for the audio signal from Ableton, right?

So, theoretically if I setup an aggregate audio device combining the RX and soundflower/ jack os I should be able to sent the Maschine/Ableton output to one of the inputs on the controller, which will enable me to use the fader/eq/effects to manipulate that audio signal and effectively using it as a 4th deck.

Yeah, so in theory, you should be able to do the same thing with Maschine - just set the outputs for the master outs on the RX and it would be able to do it without needing Soundflower (which, btw, is still available although discontinued -- its successor, Loopback, is great and I was able to use it as a work-around, but it doesn't look like you need it).

No aggregate is needed, no routing to a channel (which can't be done because you don't have discrete outputs, only master / headphone).
