Posted this on Reddit but figured I'd get more replies here...
Been using Traktor w/ a 4Trak for 2 years and then got a DDJ-SX2 in January... switched to Serato using RekordBuddy2 in June, hate Serato's library interface and lack of quantized beat repeat and gating effects. Immediately back to Traktor. Traktor 2.9 and above now use GPU rendering and it causes my laptop to throw errors after about an hour and crashes Traktor, so I'm now permanently stuck with Traktor 2.8 unless I get a new laptop.
Instead, I'm looking at RekordBox and considering the benefit of cue points working on CDJs in a club setting, curious to know what former Traktor users are thinking after making the switch... I have several questions:
Performance questions:
0.) Stability... this is of course the most important.
1.) What are your thoughts on the effects in RekordBox as opposed to traktor? I'm primarily using beatmasher, echo out, gater, phaser, reverse grain, and turntable brake. Are similar effects found in RekordBox, and how do they sound? Are they quantized to the beat? Any cool effects not found in Traktor?
2.) How is internal library management? Smart playlists a thing?
3.) Key analysis? (not super critical, I use MIK)
4.) How is MAPPING a controller? (huge PITA in Traktor) I ask this because I have a DDJ-SX2, MidiFighter 3D (Instant grat mapping), F1 and X1... I really only use the Midifigher 3D but it's because remapping in Traktor is a horrible experience
Technical questions:
5.) Resource Usage? Is it friendly on CPU / RAM? I have a 1st Gen i7 Q820 (quad core + HT), I assume it would be fine but if the coding is crap, no fantastic processor will save it.
6.) Does it render with CPU or GPU? Traktor 2.9+ started using GPU rendering and it causes my laptop to get INSANELY hot (old ATi FirePro M7740... heatsinks are not clogged, it's just crappy coding on NI's behalf...) no way to limit the frame rate or switch back to CPU rendering so now I'm stuck on 2.8.1 or I'm forced to get a new laptop for features I'm not using... Don't want to get a new laptop because I like my 17" screen and 1920x1200 resolution.
DDJ-SX2 Specific questions
7.) How's compatibility? Do the functions work as labeled on the controller or are there differences?
8.) How does scratching sound? Is the resolution tight and similar to scratching on vinyl?
That's it for now... sorry, i know it's a lot of questions, just want to know as much as possible before deciding if it's worth trying.
