Rekordbox newcomer

Hi all

I'm planning on switching to RB. I will have to re-prepare (set cue points, beat grid, loops) my +8000 songs, coming from VDJ.

I have a few specific questions :

  • Can I make a (hot cue or memory) point as a 'loading point' ? So when I load a song it is set to start at loading point.
  • Can I make loop a cue point as well as a memory (active loop) point ?

Because in some cases (many cases) I want the loop to be active when the song reaches the loop. As I understand the memory 'active loop' has two behavior settings: orange arrow = loop is saved, red arrow = loop is saved and activated en will play in loop when the memory loop point is reached. But when the arrow is red, the loop will ALWAYS be activated when reached. In some cases I don't want the memory loop to be active.

So is it possible with a midi controller command to toggle between the orange and red arrow (so activate/deactivate the red arrow when needed)?

And I want the same loop also to be hot cue. When I don't want to wait until the song reaches the loop point and I want to jump to the loop immediately.

So the loop would have to behave in three ways:

  1. hot cue (immediately jump to the saved loop) or
  2. activate loop (red arrow) so when loop is reached it stays in loop or
  3. active loop not activated (orange arrow), nothing happens (no looping)

And what about when I have 2 loops in same song I want to behave in this way ? For example: I want to activate the second loop in my song (leaving the first loop deactivated and starting to loop the second loop when it is reached).

thx & greetz

I believe you can only do this for the first memory point in a track.

  • So the loop would have to behave in three ways:

1. hot cue (immediately jump to the saved loop) or
Yes

2. activate loop (red arrow) so when loop is reached it stays in loop or
Yes but this can only be set for one loop per track.

3. active loop not activated (orange arrow), nothing happens (no looping)
No (if you are talking about the same loop).

  • And what about when I have 2 loops in same song I want to behave in this way ? For example: I want to activate the second loop in my song (leaving the first loop deactivated and starting to loop the second loop when it is reached).

Only if it is set as the one (red) active loop otherwise there is no way of setting a loop active on the fly before it reaches that loop. You would need to either trigger the loop from a hotcue or manually set it as you reach that point.

I was a bit surprised at the lack of this when moving from a competitor.

Thx for your feedback Infinite.

(Sorry for my late respons but I seemed to have forum-login-problems)

Hmz, since I regularly work with 'activate upcoming LOOPS' in my sets, this is kind of a deal-breaker for me. For my workflow this has to be something I can choose (upcoming LOOP - ON or OFF and choose (when multiple saved LOOPS in a track) which LOOP to activate). Or wait until saved LOOP 1 (not active) is passed and be able to activate next upcoming saved LOOP2).

This was/is possible in Traktor Pro 2 (which I used for about 10 years) and also in VDJ 8.2 (using 1 year now), so it's not something 'new' or out of the ordinary.

I hope they will add this in Rekordbox updates in the near future.

Meanwhile I will stick to VDJ 8.2 for the time being.

I'm also hoping Pioneer will release a controller with USB-stick input(s) (for backup purposes). The new DDJ 1000 looks pretty cool but unfortunately no USB inputs. Maybe on the next model ?

Currently I'm working with Denon MCX 8000. Good controller but not so happy with Denon's promises to update/grade the Engine (Prime) software for the MCX 8000 for over a year now and nothing happened in that direction. Not very comforting.

So should Pioneer release a similar controller (4 channels and USB inputs), I would not only jump back to Pioneer (my previous controller was SX2), but also start using their dedicated software (Rekordbox), which is going in a good direction in my opinion.

I've also searched for a Rekordbox mapping for the MCX 8000 but can't seem to find any ...

Are there Rekordbox midi mapping(s) for the Denon MCX 8000 ? If so, I would love to give it a try.
