While waiting for NAMM tomorrow I thought i'd check out phrase detection. I ran a few of my top 40 (pop) tracks through it as well as some tech house. I picked tracks that were very clear eg. intro verse chorus verse chorus outro. The software was very much off, but seemed to miss the mark by about 4 beats. So in the middle of the verse it'd choose chorus. I have hotcues set at verse 1 chorus and verse 2 so i could easily see where it was off too.
For the EDM track, it was also very much off. For example it picked chorus in the middle of a buildup right before a drop.
Personally I have no use for phrase detection and automix, but figure it may be good if I use the lighting mode as I would want lighting to change with each musical phrase. Hopefully the algorithms get better.
Some styles work better than others, but yes, improvements will come as the engineers tweak the algorithm.
You can edit them, but it too is a process more difficult than it should be, so I've been providing feedback on improving that for future.
