I doubt it's the switch; sounds more like there's some network tomfoolery going on in the background.
Yes, you want to change that to private; here's the instructions for Windows 10.
Hi all,
I have a new Dell laptop and am having problems with link dropping out randomly in Rekordbox using export mode.
To be clear. Link works for a while with all players and then randomly just stops. This might be after 2 songs have played, or during the 1st song, or even just sitting idle with no song playing. It seems to happen more often when a song is playing. It doesn't seem to matter which song .
My old laptop (also a Dell Inspiron) works completely fine with this setup but it is about 7 years old and much slower and heavier than this new one is. I didn't expect this new one to have problems with this setup.
The setup;
New Dell Inspiron laptop (8th gen core i5, 8GB RAM, 250GB SSD) Music is on an external 1Tb drive connected to a USB 3.0 port
Using Cat5 ethernet cable to connect network switch to the ethernet port on laptop
Network switch (8 port netgear GS108 unmanaged)
1 - DJM900 Nexus
2 - CDJ 2000 Nexus
2 - CDJ 900
I just got the laptop a few days ago. The ONLY thing I have installed since I got it is Rekordbox ver 5.2.0
I have spent the last few days on and off troubleshooting why the link drops randomly while playing. I do not post anything here without 1st going through a lot of troubleshooting. I am at my wits end at this point.
So, I have uninstalled an app that I thought might be interfering with networking. I can't remember the name of it but I think it was designed to improve online streaming and chat.
I have also turned off the feature that allows windows update to pull data from different sources and have set the ethernet adapter to be a metered connection.
I have turned off User Account Control
The only antivirus I am running is the default Windows Defender which ran on the old laptop as well.
I have tried a different ethernet cable from the laptop to the switch but still had the same problem
Turned off file and printer sharing
Turned Windows firewall off
Uninstalled Ethernet adapter and driver and restarted laptop and updated relevant driver.
I cannot see a way to set the ethernet connection to this swtch to be private. It appears to be set to public. I have looked and looked for a way to set it to private but there is NO setting that I can find. Even when doing a search online for steps to change it. there appears to be no way to set it with this switch connected. The old laptop also had no setting for this and it works very reliably with this setup.
I eliminated the network switch by connecting just one player directly to the Laptop and was able to play 5 songs using link (the longest it has ran so far) so that might mean there is some kind of strange interaction with this switch and the new laptop. I also noticed the connection to the single player was set to public and I saw no way to change that setting.
I have an old 10/100 network switch that I used to use when I only had 2 players but it does not have enough ports for 4 players and a mixer and the laptop (need 6, it only has 5). I did connect it and 3 players and had good results doing a 20 minute mix.
Again, my old laptop works fine so I think that narrows it down to the new laptop and possibly this switch. Anyone know a good switch I should try or any new ideas?
Thanks in advance

Thanks pulse. I followed the link you provided for changing my profile to private in Windows 10. I double checked that I was following the instructions for the exact version of Windows 10 that I have installed on my machine. However, in step 4 it says: "at the top, under Network profile, change from Public to Private". This option is not available while the switch is connected. If I connect my laptop to a router instead, that option does appear. But I am not using a router. I need to use the switch.
I also think it's really odd that the switch works fine with the old laptop and not the new one (same version of windows 10). Not sure if it's possible to update the firmware on the switch but am going to look at the manufacturers website to see.
I have been using my older switch without incident. I streamed a live set a few nights this week online (total around 8 hours). The drawback to using the old switch is that it doesn't have enough ports to connect all my gear. So I am using 3 CDJ's for now.
I realize that this is a networking issue and not related to Rekordbox itself because I can see the laptop disconnect and reconnect spontaneously even without Rekordbox running. I really do appreciate your input on this matter.
@Kenny > You need to disconnect it from a network in order to make that change; does it not stay "Private" after you reconnect?
The switch would be the better option as routers sometimes have traffic management, security, or other packet manipulation that can occur, potentially disrupting the link data.
Thanks Pulse,
Not sure what you mean by "disconnect it from a network in order to make that change" as it is not connected to a network. I am using it stand alone, Isolated. It is not connected to a modem or router or anything other than the CDJ's, Mixer and Laptop. But, To follow through, I disconnected everything from the switch except the laptop and power, and tried again to set it to private.
Micrsosoft has apparently taken that option out of the GUI in some circumstances. Might be because the unmanaged switches do not assign IP therefore they are listed as "Unidentified Network" (just a guess). I had to go into the powershell as administrator and manually change the profile to "private". This made no difference though, as the link dropped while playing the first song.
Also, the profile change didn't stay. As soon as the laptop disconnected and reconnected to the switch (during that song I just told you about) It changed back to public.
I have come to the conclusion that this particular switch just does not play nice with this new laptop. Plain and simple. I also checked the Netgear website to see if there is a firmware update, but there is not.
The older (and smaller) switch works completely fine. No problems at all. So my next course of action would be to purchase a new switch that has enough ports to connect the 4th CDJ. I probably will not do that for a while yet as I have other priorities and don't currently have room in my setup for a 4th CDJ since I added a new piece of equipment.
Thanks for the help though
I meant that the network cable must be disconnected -- it can't be connected to any devices (not just a network of computers, or the internet), if there are any other devices detected, it's "connected."
Unmanaged switches would be transparent, they're like a splitter. It's only once you connect another device (also a "client" who isn't providing any DHCP or other hosting) that it would possibly consider it an unknown network type.
If you've narrowed the problem down to the switch, then that's good to hear it's not something to be chasing around the OS (that's never fun).
