Hi,
Hoping some experts out there can recommend some best practice for me on how to set sound levels best.
First of all, just a bedroom DJ here.... My setup is a XDJ-XZ connected to RMX-1000 connected to pair Rokit G3 6". I am using the booth out to connect to RMX using noiseless TRS cables and same to the speakers (cant use master out to RMX as requires TRS connection. I wanted to know how i should best set up the master volume as there are a lot of volume controls across these three bits of kit!?
I generally trim my tracks so they are in yellow ranges on the channels, but not clipping reds. I then set the booth out volume on the XDJ to about 2PM, and then my Input volume on the RMX is set to about 11AM. This brings the lights on the input meter to again be nicely in the yellows. I then have the output volume on the RMX set to about 11AM also which goes into the yellows and not above. on the back of the rokits is set to about 10AM. With all this volume setups, I have it as loud as i want it to go, and turn the level down on the RMX output, sort of treating that as my 'master'.
Just wanted to know is that the best way to have all this gear setup or should i be turning levels up/down differently on the various devices, for best sound? I thought that you should generally always keep the volume the highest on the origin of the sound (i.e. the XDJ) rather than amplifying further away, such as on the speakers, but interested to know other peoples opinions. In case it makes it clearer here is summary of the volume levels currently set in %.
Channel trim (approx 60% - nicely in the yellows but below the reds)
Booth master out (approx 60% - no meter on this)
Input level on RMX (approx 40% nicely in the yellows but below the reds)
Output level on RMS (approx 40% nicely in the yellows but below the reds)
Rokit speakers (approx 40% turned up).
Thanks to anyone who can provide any tips!
