Nested playlists still not a feature in Rekordbox

I saw a post from 2015 where a user was requesting the nested playlists function and the reply from Pioneer was that it is on the list.

Its now 2020 and still this is not available. How come?

Or can someone provide a workaround if i want to create a playlists that fulfils the following criteria:

1. The song is between 120 and 124 bpm AND

2. The genre is EITHER "deep house" OR " funky house" AND

3. The song is in another playlist called "For Tonight's Gig"

Thanks

The Rekordbox way of using "nested" playlist is containing them into folders.

Playlists : can only contain tracks

Folders: can only contain folders or playlists (not tracks)

Now this might be a bit different from VDJ/Serato and is more closer to the iTunes model. But I think it's impossible for Pioneer DJ to change, because that would give up back-worth compatibility on (legacy) CDJ players.

Hey thanks for your response!

I'm not sure i fully understand.

Is it possible to use intelligent playlists to:

1. Collect all tracks that are either funky house or deep house between 100 and 124bpm

2. Do the above, but from within a specific folder or playlist?

I misunderstood your "nested playlists" term, which would be playlists in a playlist in a playlist.

You actually mean recursive intelligent playlists, where the next level of playlists draws on the results of the upper level playlist.

I don't see that happen anytime soon, it's doable but the problem with things like that is "intelligent" playlists are actually formula's executed in real time to get the desired results. A playlists drawing on a former playlist would eat away a decent amount of resources (cpu cycles) which would result in very laggy response from RB.

Ok thanks. But is it at least possible to collect all tracks that are either funky house or deep house between 100 and 124bpm?

Yes; create an intelligent playlist for those criteria.

You can create an intelligent playlist with genre and BPM filters but you cannot use a specific playlist as source.

Ok, forget using a specific playlist as a source (although this is very much desired!)

I dont believe its possible to collect all tracks that are either funky house or deep house between 100 and 124bpm... Which seems like a major oversight. Hopefully (and most likely) I'm being thick.

I know i can set up an intelligent playlist that will pick up ALL songs that are between 100-124 and ALL songs that are Funky house and ALL songs that are Deep house.

But please can you show me how to set it up so i get ONLY songs which are between 100-124bpm AND either funky house OR deep house (that are within this bpm range)?

Since you cant have an OR statement within an AND statement in the intelligent playlists you will have to get creative.

I would solve it like this:

Add a keyword for all the songs in the funky or deep house genre. Add it to the end of genre field and use ”contains” on the genre and your keyword. It does mess up your tags so a cleaner solution is to use a field that you dont really need, lets say ”composer”. There you can add different keywords for different genres, occations etc. and filter on contains.

Sorry, missed the "or" -- here's how I'd do it in that case. It's not a dynamic solution, but you could easily do this any time you update your collection...

1. Tag your music, either manually or just filter by genre and add a MyTag for the "Funky House" or "Deep House" as necessary.

2. Open the Filter panel and select a BPM of 122, then select +/- 2%, and click the OR button above your MyTag for the genre tags, selecting Funky House and Deep House.

3. Select all the tracks and add them to a Funky / Deep playlist.

4. Next time you need to update that playlist, repeat the process and ignore any duplicates.

Ok, so it's as i suspected. Unfortunately RB can neither search within a specific playlist, nor create a dynamic smart playlist that can search for songs in a hierarchical manner.

This is so disappointing i almost feel like crying. Until these features materialise i will alas have to stick to itunes for music management as it has both these features, which are absolutely essential for me, and i i would have thought for most other djays also. But i could be wrong.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. Really appreciate it.

rekordbox can search within a specific playlist -- if you're just searching, but it can't currently use it as a reference for contents of another playlist.

To search within a playlist, just make sure your keyboard shortcuts are configured for that:

The default will be for Command+F to search the current playlist, and with that assignment, CTRL+F searches the entire collection. Obviously on a Windows machine, CTRL+F is the default, so use something else.
