Rekordbox + subscription

Hi, hope you all are well. Being a rekordbox user for many years I have found that there are issues especially surrounding your subscription model. I am currently on version 5.8.5 with RMX effects and works flawlessly.

I have seen alot of DJs etc in these forums saying they are not happy with the changes especially in this pandemic. I have seen alot of backlash regarding subscription plans that you have plus software bugs.

1. Could you bring back addon packs such as RMX effects, video etc for Rekordbox 6? I see that alot of DJs don't want to pay the highest plan just to use certain features, it doesn't make sense! I myself just want to use RMX effects and not interested in using other features such as cloud, video, DVS etc.

2. Alot of DJs are feeling that they are being ripped off in away when they buy very expensive pioneer equipment and cannot unlock performance mode with having to subscribe or purchase hardware unlocked device. Some of the hardware  have usb ports to plug the decks into a computer to use as a controller. These two should be hardware unlocked devices if they are not already.

3. Please please make rekordbox compatible with AMD processors!!! AMD is gaining ground and there current processors are more advanced than intel ones.  Intel still on 14nm and AMD are on 7nm plus PCI 4.0. I see some DJs in the forums have AMD processors.

4. Please make smart playlists, for example if you have folder with mp3s and you have a existing playlist that is created from that folder, if you add an mp3 the playlist should add that mp3 and be analyzed automatically, please make this feature possible, I know virtual DJ has this sort of feature.

5. Please look into bringing  rekordox to linux, there is a demand for this, maybe not big.. yet.  Linux has less latency and is more better than windows.  Since you make rekordbox for MAC OS (Unix), why can't you do it for Linux?

Please listen to your customers and try to cater for there demands. Due to subscription model etc a fair amount of customers have or will jumped ship to your competitors such as Serato/Traktor/Virtual DJ.

I myself was thinking going to Serato because of the features and you can purchase addon packs, plus you have an option to purchase the software outright or opt tor subscription plans.

Why cant you adopt a pricing strategy like ableton live or traktor for those who wants to pay the software outright than having to pay monthly minus the cloud of course?

For example, for each major update of rekordbox (verion 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 etc) a customer has the pay a fee or something.

Its an indication that redkordbox can be improved much further.

I know you guys can do it and rekrodbox has so much potential.

Kind regards,

Jamie.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for your comments and feedback. As you likely know, the decision to switch to a subscription model was made months before the pandemic hit. This decision was made to provide customers with a better experience as the majority of the features they need are actually available through hardware unlock, and those who have hardware which is not an unlock device, or want higher level features, can ensure that they always have the latest versions with all of the available functions without having to pay additional for upgrades or add-ons. This is a business model that many others have gone to before us, and yes, there has been some negative feedback but we won't be the last to make this change either. I'm sorry if it doesn't fit your preference -- you can always purchase an unlock device such as a DDJ-XP1 or XP2 which provide a significant value in unlock for the low cost of the hardware, in addition to their hardware performance functions.

Software bugs are another issue, but we constantly release updates to address them. We've had 11 updates since the launch in mid-April; that's an average of 23 days between releases.

To answer your numbered comments / questions:

1. Sorry, only available as part of the Creative subscription, and we have no plans to offer a-la-carte purchases.

2. This has been discussed many times before, but I'll give you the short version here... top line CDJs and DJMs did not come with rekordbox 5 licenses to unlock performance mode as the intention was never for DJs to use $6000+ worth of hardware as a controller. Most DJs would use stand-alone mode and many clubs didn't want DJs on their computers. We heard the feedback and with the release of rekordbox 6, started offering hardware unlock for the new CDJ-3000's and DJM-V10. All hardware moving forward will offer that capability however we will not be providing legacy owners with the hardware unlock functions. Sorry!

3. There are technical hurdles in how AMD's CPU handles video and audio processing differently from Intel. This is the main reason you haven't seen AMD as an option for supported CPUs, but we are aware of the demand for it, especially with the processing power of the new 5000-series Ryzen processors. We hope that this is something we'll see sooner rather than later.

4. We have no plans to include automatic file importing as there is a risk it could interrupt performance, but thank you for your comments.

5. Sorry, there are no plans for a Linux version for a number of factors, including the differing number of Linux flavours available causing platform fragmentation, as well as the difficulty in supporting that extremely small market segment.

We certainly do value our customers' feedback and have made changes in our hardware and software over the years to that effect.

You mention Serato with an outright purchase, but I'll point out that they too have a subscription option... it won't be long before their single-purchase option disappears as well. ;)

As for major version updates - our plan is that customers won't have to pay for an upgrade as it's available at no additional cost with their subscription. You always have the latest software with all features.

Thanks for seeing things from outside the box.

You welcome. Thank you for your response.

I always have ideas.

I have DDJ-1000, obviously a hardware unlock device. Its a shame that you wont look into offering addon packs again. There is demand for this, even from looking through the forums. There is always money to be made :)

The creative subscription makes sense for those who will mostly use the features that if offers. Not all DJs will use all of them as they all have different needs/requirements. Bringing back addon packs will remedy this, especially for DVS users or Video DJs. I am not one of them, but only uses effects hence RMX effects.

Regarding AMD, I am glad you guys are looking into it, this will help your customer base :)

For point 4, you could introduce the feature still, if DJs are only setting up playlists or prepping it would not impact performance. I think it would be a valid feature for those who don't use Itunes or beatport link etc.

I understand where you are coming from regarding Linux. One day it may become popular.

For myself, I wont make that jump to rekordbox 6 yet, because I know I will lose out on RMX effects. I will also wait until rekordbox 6 becomes stable as it can just like 5.8.5.

I know there are other DJs in the same position, even from looking into the forums.

Would you look into adding new effects into rekordbox hardware unlocked plan and the core plan?

I do read and upon what fixes and features that there are in each version of rekordbox, seeing how it evolves.

Kind regards,

Jamie.

Got just curious, what compatibility issues AMD processors have that need fixing in Rekordbox?

I have Lenovo Yoga 7 Slim (AMD Ryzen 7 4800U) and Rekordbox seems to work just fine on it.
In fact it seems to work better (at least Analyzing runs much faster) than on my previous laptop, which had Intel i7-1065G7.

From software developers perspective, it should not really matter.
AMD and Intel,  both use x86-x64 architecture, so unless you are using some kind of weird instruction sets in your software, which AMD does not have (for example AVX-512) it should run without any significant difference and only difference you would see is caused by raw performance/available threads.

It's not that it can't or won't run, but rather that AMD and Intel CPUs handle things a bit differently in data flow. Yes, they can both run the same instructions, but it's other things like how they interact with their cache, memory, USB chipsets, graphics and audio devices, etc.

The older Athlon-era (Zen 1) products were notorious for crashes or massive latency problems, but even Zen 2 was an improvement with many users reporting success with DJing on them. Your 4000-series is based on Zen 2 and may be just fine, but hopefully it stays that way!

Cache(s) and Memory are managed by OS and usually in Kernel level (especially cache(s)), so if underlying OS is incapable of handling that part properly, you would be out of luck anyways... :)

BTW, Zen 1 crashes and sloppy performance were mostly tied to Windows 10 scheduler and due to fact, that Ryzen CPU's are not monolithic, but rather CCX, hence OS needed to handle threads differently. It caused lot of thread hopping, between CCX(s) which caused lots of latency issues and even obscure problem, when thread which should have run on Core, was assigned to SMT, causing sudden drops to subpar performance.

As far as AMD laptop CPU's and APU's go, so far they are all monolithic chips and not CCX based, which means, they should be mostly free from those issues. That probably explains, why I have encountered none so far.

I do must agree on USB and Graphics part, especially if you would want to use something, like HW encoding/decoding on GPU. As Intel/AMD/nVidia all have their proprietary "black box" HW encoders/decoders, each of those have different implementations and API's, so your code has to treat them separately.

From audio devices handling, it should not matter much. Soundcard manufacturers and their drivers, should take care most of it and should expose standard API's/Protocols (ASIO, WASAPI, Direct Sound, etc...).

It will be my last post on this topic, as we are getting way off-topic here, even if topic itself is quite interesting.

Take care and thank you for the answer.

No worries - some of it gets VERY technical (and way over my head), so I just smile and nod and say "Hopefully AMD support soon!"

I hope soon, as I'm in the process of building a new computer, with the only part I'm waiting on being the Ryzen 9 5900X... stupid lack of stock. lol
