Technics 1200 traded in for CDJ + DJM

Hi there - many thanks in advance for the advice offered.

I'm a bedroom vinyl dj and I have a second pair of 1200s that I'm looking to trade in for a CDJ and DJM. My question is: what should I be looking to trade in for? I realize this is a near impossible question to answer without background, so here's what I hope are some key points:

- I've got a vinyl collection that I'm considering converting to digital

- I have 100% no experience with CDJs or DJMs

- I only play at home

- Part of my motivation is to be able to offer my kids something to learn on if they do get into it

- I'm note against trading my set up and adding some cash to get better gear

- Without going crazy, I'd like to get the best gear I can get - for quality and longevity, and also for investment/resell considerations

- I don't want to interface with my/a computer while playing

- Ideally, I'd like to have the future option of playing in local clubs if all goes according to plan

- With knowing very little more than model names and approximate values, I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of CDJ850s + DJM400 as a fair trade, and then a level up from that +cash as the next option.

Specifically, I've got a couple questions:

- Given the summary above, do CDJ850s + DJM400 sound like a decent idea, or is it worth investing some cash and stepping into something bigger and better?

- Is there anything that stands out as completely off or wrong about my thinking? Like, why waste your time with 850s when they're completely flawed...or something blatant that screams of a red flag?

-Are there any major changes coming that should be kept in the mind when considering the investment...like moving completely away from USBs? (I'm struggling with an example here...just trying to avoid major pitfalls)

For reference - here's the ad I've posted for my gear:

I've had a few offers, but with them come the realization that I don't really know what I'm getting myself in to...so I'm hoping for any advice I can get.

Thanks for your time and help

I would strongly advice against the 850's. They will not give you a good DJ experience, loops drift, sound is awful especially with master tempo on and they lack a lot of essential functions. I would aim for a used pair of 2000 NXS1, they are really good machines that have no issues and will properly prepare you for the clubs. If you're not going to use CD's the XDJ series, aim for the MK2, or XDJ-RX2 is a good alternative. Both are similar enough to a standard club set to make it easy for you to play out.

And a tip for digitising vinyl, don't. Wait for a 50% off deal at your favourite digital store and buy them again in AIFF. You will receive nicely mastered uncompressed files with artwork and all the metadata attached to them. Minimal amount of work and maximal quality :)

thanks for the quick reply - much appreciated. Unfortunately the 2000s are above my pay-grade. I'm trying to get my hands on as good a gear as I can, without investing too much more than my 1200s, and accepting the consequences that come with it. Basically, I'm valuing my set up at about $1000-1200, and am willing to add about another $500. But of course, this brings up the usual concern: if you're willing to do that, why not put another $500 in and get something really worthwhile...

but you bring up a really good point that I should've emphasized in my summary above: no, I'm definitely not going to be using CDs - I don't have any and don't plan on ever having them. I haven't looked into the MK2 or XDJ-RX2....don't know what they are. To be honest and accurate, club play is a long shot - I would value quality and resale value over proximity to club standards.

and thanks vinyl tip - I've been reading about this and your opinion seems to be the norm.

thanks again!

A new XDJ-RX2 seems to go for around 1700$, look for a used unit and you'll be within your budget. The RX units are all-in-one DJ systems so you'll just need nothing else, except for a good USB stick, to get started.
