XDJ-R1 Freeze, crash and high pitch horn sound

Hi there,

I've had this unit for a year now and experienced the dreaded freeze-horn-tone crash a few times but never live - and now have. Man, this sucks. This has been posted about so many times but no resolve. The last firmware update was a year ago. Are you no longer supporting the XDJ-R1 and will you be trying to resolve this ongoing issue.

This is meant to be a professional piece of kit - please, please try and sort this out.

@Nico > Thanks for that information, I have passed it along to the product manager and hope to get some additional detail. I'm not sure why that's the kind of thing the repair shop in Madrid would know about, but not the product team. If you have any contact details for them, or who provided the info / did the work, please let me know - I'd like to put them in contact with Japan.

So - update. I've spoken to my local Pioneer service centre. They tell me they've never come across this issue before & there's nothing on Pioneer updates.

They don't believe the fix from @Nico would make any difference & aren't prepared to carry out the work without diagnosing it first. They want the unit or.... a video!

Can we get anything official from Pioneer yet or at least the Madrid Service Centre publishing the fault along with changes.

Another Gig looming on Saturday which I'm dreading. Long gone are the days looking forward to a gig with the XDJ-R1

@Lee - I've got one on the 24th and I'm so apprehensive about it. Didn't have the crash for a while and then two in a row on Saturday. I'm sure there is no pattern here.

Pioneer - are we getting there?

@Lee > What I've been told is that service bulletin was to address units that would not power-down when the power button was pressed and held. That issue affected an early batch of R1 units and all units after that discovery were updated at the factory to avoid this, and they believe there should be no units out in the public which do not have this fix already.

Our product team doesn't have any other information on how or why this issue occurs, sorry.

Has there been a "fix" to the freeze and high pitch horn yet? I had this happen to me at my last 3 gigs. Thank God they were bar gigs and not weddings! I am in the same boat when it comes to the horrible anxiety hoping it doesn't happen during a gig. Each time it happened, i got booed and had to power off and power back on. By that time, I lost the dance floor. I lost one of the gigs because of this issue. They invited me to dj twice, after the 3rd time of this happening, not to my surprise, they didn't invite me back. Keep in mind, the reason I got invited back the first few times was because I rocked the house with no problems.

Perhaps we should look into a class-action law suit because they clearly know about this issue and have nothing but excuses and requests for videos to stall in hopes that we just give up!

@Bill > Not to come across the wrong way, but if you've had it happen 3 times recently, did you note what you were doing at the time when it occurred? As I've stated several times before, our engineers are unable to replicate this issue, and would be appreciative if anyone who has this kind of freeze provide them with the conditions under which it occurred so they can try and trace the problem.

I was using it in normal conditions, indoors, only usb and cds. Nothing unusual. This isn't the first time you guys have heard this. People have offered to send in their controller since, for some miracle, your engineers are the only ones that never have this problem. You don't take anyone up on their offer. There are so many complaints online. Not just here. I am seriously thinking of contacting a lawyer. Not just for me but all of us that own the xdj-r1. I have already saved the pages with all the complaints I have found. I Don't have a problem digging deeper. Either offer a fix, a replacement with a guarantee or a refund and enough excuses. The problem is real.

I will monitor this thread but i am done replying. My next contract will be in the form of an official letter to corporate. It's a shame you treat loyal customers like this. With all the back and forth with no solution or idea besides wasting our time with the same questions and comments over and over. Obviously there's an issue. I thought your engineers are also supposed to be problem solvers. I know one thing for sure. Not all publicity is good publicity Pioneer! I was a Technic 1200 guy, then Numark (not a single problem with them) my whole 20 years of djing.i gave Pioneer one chance and it's looking like a decision I might regret.

For the record, we have had users send in their units to be inspected, but the issue has never reproduced itself during testing. I have an R1 myself and have never had this problem in all my tests either.

Pioneer DJ can't exactly issue a fix if the bug isn't known.

@Pulse - I don't think Pioneer are showing any empathy for the users on this thread. There are enough users here having the same issues and we should all be pacified by you showing us what on earth you are doing to try and resolve the issue. Why don't you open a group chat for us to speak with the engineers directly and to try and replicate the issue? To constantly bat the ball back into our court is totally unacceptable.

@Official Wild Bill, When you write the letter to corporate would it be possible to CC in all those in this thread?

Completely agree - I rang a service centre last week who told me this isn't even on Pioneers service updates as a known issue. I feel like the posts on this forum aren't going anywhere.

I don't really care about the R1 you own that never fails - I care about my R1 & the reputation this is doing to my business. I had to stop myself from buying a replacement pioneer system this week.... How can I possibly buy new Pioneer DJ equipment when the last purchase I made is failing.

To ask us to document exactly what we did the minutes before freeze is really a stalling point. If I'd seen any patterns I would have reported them but there aren't any.

I think Pioneer should at least set up a conference call or Facebook live with the affected owners to listen and understand the problems.

TAKE SOME ACTION PIONEER!

@Lee - Do you know what I think, it's because we're using 'mobile DJ' kit that we're not being taken seriously - well that's how it makes me feel. The reason I bought this was so I could use it professionally on the move. All that happens now is that I'm embarrassed on the move. I halted buying an XDJ-RX2 last week because I thought @Nico had cracked it.

@Nick I so nearly bought the RX2 but not sure I can trust the product. I've also got a few CDs I haven't got around to downloading to digital yet & don't want to lose the ability to play CDs completely.

My old CDJs seem to last a lifetime - maybe Pioneer are making kit not to last now to improve sales...

Hi ^^

I just saw your video.

Well did you reproduce each time that you play with your R1?

Are you with last firmware too ???

For mine, i have the unit hangs after around of 1h30.

Not each time, but one time per month...

When it happen maybe more on the Deck 2 the played song isn't stop but it's like a horn sound like the title of the subject.

As TK pioneer in Paris didn't reproduce the bug they didn't do anything on my R1.

Bug exist maybe in different way.

But it exist.

I'm still ready to send wherever it's needed my R1 to be fully inspected with my USB key to see what's wrong.

Now like i said before, i'm playing with a RX2, but i'd like to have a full working order R1 like everybody that have one with random bug.

Hello Pioneer Djm 500,

Will you please send us the data stored in your USB key?

It may be too big to attach here. Please use file sharing service such as DropBox and attach the link here.

Thank you very much for your kind cooperation.

Hi,

Link will be ready for 7pm30 french hour.

I'd like to send only on a private mail to à official Pioneer Tk.

Don't want to let all what I have on my key visible for anybody.

Please don't email it to them -- it will get lost in the system. Send it to me, and I'll attach it to the ticket internally.

 Your welcome :-)

Hope it can solve one day the bug for all.

At this time, will play on my RX2 1.2 firmware.

A pleasure over 2h without bug using in stand-alone mode.

Hi,

Few weeks ago i tested all mp3 songs no error with  a soft made for it.

Well "small pattern test " Error free. (21min running test)

Should i run Full Pattern and the other in one pass?

Maybe faulty R1 are not so much?

I mean maybe a random Serial No of them???

This is never going to get resolved, is it?

@Pulse - is it worth taking our serial numbers to see if there is some relationship with the batch? It's obviously not the USB or the tracks - it's the hardware, the kit.

We are 7 months on from my original post. Pioneer - please listen to your customers.

It's not related to a batch, and we do hope to resolve it for you.

If you'd like to also test your USB drive with the linked tool and provide the results, that may help narrow things down.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for sharing what youre all experiencing and for the Pioneer crew for keeping the post up to date. I copied this post from another I made...I hope it helps everyone in some way.  It could be a hardware issue but its not.  Its software.  I wasnt able to replicate the issue but I experienced it quite a number of times.

I was able to resolve this issue where the unit is freezing with that horn sound.  Sounds like the echo effect at 1/600 or some intense value like that.

I updated all of the following:

macbook air Late 2015 Sierra to MacOS High Sierra

Rekordbox to Version 5.3.0

the R1 to version 1.13.

iphone to ios 11.4

Remotebox to 1.3.1

Ive played on my system multiple times for up to an hour each time and there havent been any issues with both Export and Performance features in Rekordbox.  The sound quality has improved, the sync time is shorter, and Im a fan of the longer waves in Performance.  I had issues with connecting with Remotebox before but none now post update.

I use .aiff  but some .mpg files too.  All tracks were downloaded from Beatport.

I keep a close eye on the itunes .xml file and Collection within Rekordbox for duplicates.  Within iTunes settings soundcheck if turned off and the "copy files to itunes media folder..." within itunes preferences is unchecked until ts time to add more music.

Let me know if you have any questions...Peace...
