DDJ-RR

I DJ 3 or 4 times a week @ 5 star hotels in their lounges/bars. I recently sold my Traktor & completely switched over to rekordbox & got the DDJ-RR.

Since I got the DDJ-RR, it has suddenly crashed twice during my sets @ the hotels. I use the DDJ RR with a 2015, 13 inch mac. An RCA cable is going into the hotel system from the DDJ-RR. The DDJ-RR has crashed once plugged into the wall, & once just powered by my mac.

This is what happens;

Music is playing fine. Suddenly, like out of nowhere, the DDJ-RR goes completely dark & some constant horrible high-pitched noise blares out from the speakers, even when I turn down the faders on the DDJ-RR or turn the DDJ-RR off. The only way to stop the horrible noise is to turn off the hotel amp, unplug the USB cable from the mac to the DDJ-RR, & turn the DDJ-RR on again.

It's an absolute nightmare & I don't know what to do. If this happens a third time, I think I will get fired.

What is it? What could be the problem here?

Have you checked that your RR has the firmware updated?

When the crash occurred, did the waveforms on the screen stop as well or did they continue? Did you notice if the audio drop-out meter (top right, near the clock in rekordbox) was full?

Yes, the latest firmware is installed.

Rekordbox on the mac screen is unaffected & keeps going like nothing has happened. The audio drop-out meter was completely normal, too.

It's the DDJ-RR that suddenly goes dark; All lights on it turn off, every single thing that was illuminated one second before, goes completely black. Then that horrible white noise sound kicks in & my heart goes into sheer panic mode & the high paying customers cringe. Even when I turn the power button of the DDJ-RR on & off then, nothing changes. The white noise sound continues & the DDJ-RR is completely black & unresponsive.

Have you tried using a different USB cable and different USB port on your computer?

Good point. Perhaps the fault lies with the USB port on the left side of my Mac.

When it first crashed last week, which was 2 hours into my 4 hour set, I was using the USB cable that came with the RR. It was plugged into the left USB port on my Mac.

When it crashed last night, which was also 2 hours into my 4 hour set, I was using an Analysis Plus Purple Plus USB 1m cable. It was also plugged into the left USB port on my Mac.

I was so freaked out, that I went & bought the DDJ-RB today, thinking that I'd bring the RR in for servicing to my local authorized dealer. But now that you mention it, I will try one last time with the RR, this time plugged into the right side USB port on my Mac. I have four 4 hour sets next week, so hopefully it won't crash again, & I won't have the hotel GM & the Food & Beverage manager breathing fire down my neck!

Thank you very much for the suggestion. It does make sense that it's a USB connection issue. The RR really is a beautiful piece of equipment & I really want to continue using it. I'll post again after all four set are done next week.

Typically Macs are pretty good about being able to provide adequate power, and it could certainly be that the cable was an issue (even good quality cables can fail).

If you have the chance to test it while not on the job, that would certainly be a more ideal time for it to fail on you, but do give it a try using the other port. If it happens again, it could certainly be a hardware problem, although it's odd that it would occur after x hours and not immediately.

Were you using the DC power adapter? That might be worth considering as well.

@pulse Please can you explain why it's better to use the power adapter rather than just the USB power on it's own?

I have a DDJ-RR which i've used 4 times now with no issues whilst connected to the mains. Last night I used it with USB power only and after about 3 hours my temperature suddenly shot up to 100 degrees and I was unable to browse my library as every time I scrolled through the songs it kept cutting the song out. Not very impressed to be honest!

I managed to play a song from my phone and restart my Macbook and it was fine for the rest of the night but I did plug the power supply back in!

@Ian > Well, for starters, not all computers have USB chipsets designed to deliver the appropriate amount of power, which is exactly why the RR features a DC power-input. (That and the XLR & booth outputs don't work without having this additional power.)

What is the spec on your computer and what is the setting of the audio buffer in the rekordbox preferences?

@pulse

The buffer is set at 544 samples (12.3ms) I can't set it any lower as I get dropouts, I can't set it any higher as the microphone delay is very off putting!

Specs of my computer are more than capable...

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM and Intel Iris 1536 MB graphics card.

Don't get me wrong I will use it with the power supply 90% of the time but I wanted to try without on this occasion. I have had an SR previously with no issues on USB power although clearly that has a lot less going on inside it.

Was the audio drop-out meter near-full when the browsing / cut outs occurred?

No it was maybe about 1/3 at the most.
Scrolling became really slow as did loading new tracks.

Was it possibly analysing new tracks while you were using the software?

So it turns out the issue was with my left side USB port on my 13' 2015 Macbook Pro.

Upon taking Pulses' advice, I used the right side USB port of my mac for all four 4 hour sets last week with the DDJ-RR. It worked like a charm, with no issues whatsoever.

Hopefully my experience can be a lesson for anyone who encounters a similar issue. Bottom line, USB ports can fail sometimes.

Thank you for the advice Pulse.

It's happened again.

2 hours into my set at the same 5 star hotel, & suddenly the same thing. The USB was connected to the right side port of my macbook pro. The DDJ-RR was plugged in with the AC chord, too.

I will bring the DDJ-RR in for servicing. This is just unacceptable. It's the third time this has happened.

I am now using the DDJ-RB that I had purchased as back-up.

I am absolutely petrified of using the DDJ-RR now. I cannot trust it to perform.

Sorry to hear about this, I've asked our DDJ product team to investigate, they may have more questions but I'll relay that information when they ask.

Update.

I got my DDJ RR back from Pioneer. They tested it for 2 days, 8 hours each, couldn't find anything wrong with it. So they did a factory reset & returned it to me.

Now I'm using it at home & am using my DDJ RB for the hotel gigs. I haven't had any issues with the RB at all at the hotels.

I will attempt to use the RR at the hotels again after I purchase the new macbook pro, which should be coming out later this year.

For what it's worth, I've been using a 2012 MBP with my DDJ-SX2 since it came out with zero problems running Serato DJ in every version released. Two weeks ago, I decided to take my DDJ-SZ to a gig, I had one crash (where it looked like my external USB3 SSD disconnected), but this weekend I had an issue where the DDJ-SZ would stop playing audio every 3 minutes. Fortunately this occurred during cocktails and I ran some music from my iPad while I did some troubleshooting. It turns out it was a bad USB cable, and I figured that out by narrowing down the possible problem spots.

It could well be the problem is with the DDJ, but until you have isolated the source of the problem, test everything you can in an environment that is not live! Sorry this continues to be an issue.

Have you solved the problem? I have the same issue and I think it´s not worth buying other controller when I have just purchased a very good one. My laptop runs Windows 10, it´s an Intel i7 and it has 8gb of ram, so it wouldn´t have this kind of problems. What about the software, the driver or thr firmware?

@Piccardoignacio > Which problem are you having - crashing or a high-pitched noise?

If it's a problem with crashing, our product teams recently identified an issue with the Widows 10 Anniversary Update causing a variety of product drivers to crash or to disconnect / not be detected. We are in the process of correcting the driver issue and will be posting updates as they become available.

The high-pitched noise is the problem ! The software doesn´t crash, but the hardware does. I mean, It becomes completely unresponsive and a horrible noise can be heard. Unless I disconnect the controller and reconnect it again, this situation won´t change. I need a solution because a friend lent me a Denon MC 4000 to use with Serato and I cannot use my controller in a gig because it would be a terrible performance. Thank you !

The DDJ-RR hardware crash/high-pitched noise issue has given me heartbattcks four times now, in the middle of my sets with many customers in attendance. Now my DDJ-RR is parked in my living room for home DJ sessions. At the hotels I now use my XDJ-700's with a DJM-250. (DJM-450 should arrive any day now. Put in an order last month)

Because of issues with the DDJ-RR, I also bought the DDJ-RB, which I've used many times in gigs without issue, until last week, at a high profile event, I had the same hardware crash/high pitch noise issue. Absolute disaster.

Now I am waiting for my new MacBook Pro touch panel to arrive early December. I added in 3.3GHz/16GB Hopefully this will solve the issue. Until then, I just cannot trust the DDJ line to perform. Maybe it's my 2015 MacBook Pro, but I never had any problems using it with Traktor. It really stresses me out, & I'm very grateful I still have a job as a DJ in these luxury venues where these crashes have occurred.

I don´t think the problem is your laptop, because I use the controller with Windows 10 and I experience the same issue ! I don´t trust in this line until a few updates have been released soon.

The same problem happened to me and it was more than once. We need to know what happens. It is clear that the pioneer has not yet been able to solve this failure !!! I have already increased the size of the buffer and no solution. I even put it in a USB 3.0 port and the problem was not solved !!! The sound came out with a kind of noise.

Our rekordbox team needs anyone having this issue to create a support inquiry so they can collect the DMP files created during the crash.

Thanks for your continued patience.
